  2. Agenda ■ Sura al-Ahzab - wives of the Prophet (s) as mothers of believers - double the reward and punishment - rules for the wives - are the wives part of the Ahlul bayt? ■ Sura at-Tahrim

  3. Sura al-Ahzab The Prophet has a greater claim on the faithful than their own selves, and his wives are (as) their mothers; (33:6) Questions ■ Why are the wives of the Prophet (s) termed as mothers of the believers. What responsibility does the Muslim Ummah have towards them? ■ What are the responsibilities of the wives towards the Ummah?

  4. O Prophet! say to your wives: if you desire this world's life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you, and release you in a graceful manner. And if you desire Allah and His Apostle and the abode of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has prepared for the virtuous among you a great reward. (33: 28-29) ■ pondering over the verse ■ cause of revelation ■ reply of the wives ■ lessons for believers

  5. O wives of the Prophet! whoever of you commits an open indecency, her punishment shall be doubled, and this is easy for Allah. But whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Apostle and acts righteously, We will give her a double reward and We have prepared for her an honorable sustenance. (33:30-31) ■ pondering over the verse ■ why the double punishment and reward? ■ who else could the verse refer to?

  6. O wives of the Prophet! you are not like any other women If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in (your) speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word. And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the former days of ignorance, and keep up prayer, and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Apostle. Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you with a thorough purification. And remember what is recited in your houses of the signs of Allah and the wisdom; surely Allah is All-Attentive, Aware. (33: 32-34) ■ rules for the wives of the Prophet ■ are the wives included in the Ahlul bayt?

  7. Questions for Tadabbur 1) What is the difference between ‘soft speech’ and ‘a good word’? 2) What is the disease in the heart? 3) Why is the age of ignorance termed the ‘former’ age? Is there a later one? 4) What is the difference between the ‘signs of Allah’ and ‘wisdom’?

  8. Rules for the Wives ■ have piety ■ do not speak softly ■ speak good words ■ stay in your homes ■ do not display yourselves ■ establish prayer ■ give charity ■ obey Allah and His Messenger ■ remember what is recited in your homes of the signs of Allah, and of wisdom

  9. Who are the Ahlul Bayt? ■ hadith of Kisaa ■ hadith from Umm Salamah ■ the Prophet’s recitation of this verse at the house of Fatima (a) ■ hadith Mutawatir from the Ahlul Sunnah ■ the wives never claimed to be part of the Ahlul bayt ■ the actions of some of the wives during the time of the Prophet (s) and after his death, do not conform to this verse

  10. Sura at-Tahrim O Prophet! why do you forbid (yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Allah indeed has sanctioned for you the dissolution of your oaths and Allah is your Protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise. (66:1-2) ■ cause of revelation ■ attitude of the wives

  11. And when the Prophet confided to one of his wives-- but when she divulged it, and Allah informed him about it, he made known part of it and avoided part; so when he told her of it, she said: Who informed you of this? He said: The Knowing, the one Aware, informed me. If you both repent to Allah, for your hearts have certainly swerved, and if you back up each other against him, then surely Allah is his Guardian, and Jibraeel and the righteous believers, and thereafter, the angels, are his supporters. Maybe, if he divorces you, his Lord will give him in your place wives better than you, submissive, faithful, obedient, penitent, Devout, given to fasting, virgins and non-virgins. (66:3-5)

  12. Wives of other Prophets Allah sets forth an example to those who disbelieve the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut they were both under two of our righteous servants, but they betrayed them so they did not avail them in any way against Allah, and it was said enter both the fire with those who enter [it] (66:10)
