  2. Is this you when you speak in public: • Shaking limbs? • Dry mouth? • Speak too softly? • Speak too fast?

  3. Is this you when you speak in public: • Awkward gestures? • Body swaying? • No eye contact? • Monotone delivery?

  4. If so: • You have stage fright • The only way to deal with stage fright is: • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

  5. Speaking in Debate • The goal is to change someone’s mind or way of thinking about a topic • Voice and body language are very important

  6. Elements of Persuasion: • Body language – proper posture gives the message that you are confident

  7. Elements of Persuasion: • Pronunciation – it’s important to pronounce each word • Avoid slang • Don’t slur words • Avoid saying things like “you know”

  8. Elements of Persuasion: • Pitch – refers to the highs and lows of the voice. • Avoid a monotone.

  9. Elements of Persuasion: • Speed • About 140 – 160 words per minute is the normal pace for debating • Avoid speaking too fast

  10. Elements of Persuasion: • Pause – the pause is a critical tool. • Use pauses to emphasize a certain word. • Pause before and after a word for special emphasis.

  11. Elements of Persuasion: • Volume – use with caution. • Don’t scream but projecting your voice to the back of the room can be very effective.

  12. Elements of Persuasion: • Variance means changing pitch, volume and speed. • Never go more than one paragraph without vocal variance.

  13. Strategy • Appear truthful • Appear committed to your side of the debate • Portray yourself as an authority on the topic • Don’t be afraid to show emotion
