    3. Resentment begins to grow • 1959: 20,000 Tutsis murdered, more fled to neighboring countries • Rwanda gains independence in 1962 • Hutus take control • Tutsis become scapegoats

    4. Genocide Begins • April 1994: Juvenal Habyarimana, • President, Hutu, losing popularity • Killed after plane shot down • Blamed on Tutsis • Genocide begins
