  2. With science, memorization is important • But that is the 1st step! • Understanding, analyzing is critical

Examples • Ocean Acidification • Why is pH important in living systems? • Why does a change in pH cause issues? • Enzymes • Calcification • So the pH goes from 8.1 to 7.9, is that a big deal? • Important to talk about how pH is measured • How does carbon dioxide change the pH? • How do humans put more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? • What exactly is burning of fossil fuels?

  4. Eutrophication • What causes an algal bloom? • What does excess fertilizer/sewage do? • Why do organisms need N and P? – find N and P in molecules like proteins, DNA, etc • Excess nutrients cause the phytoplankton that are there to grow uncontrollably • But is that a big deal? Why?
