  1. Baptism is the Work of God

  2. Mark 16:16 – “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” • Acts 2:38 – Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” • 1Peter 3:21 – Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you – not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience – through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. • Ephesians 2:8-9 – 8For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. • THERE IS NO CONFLICT!

  3. The one who is baptized is passive. • Baptism is done to the person who is being saved. It is not a work of him, but rather it is a work upon him. He is not baptizing, but rather he is being baptized. • Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38, 41; 8:12-13, 36, 38 • The work is performed on him!

  4. The one who baptizes is insignificant. • No particular requirements for the baptizer are given in Scripture. • 1Corinthians 1:13-17 • 13Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one would say you were baptized in my name. 16Now I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.

  5. The one who baptizes is insignificant. • Therefore, the baptizer is not attempting to save another by his own works or power. He knows there is no power in himself for salvation, for he baptizes in the name of Jesus Christ.

  6. Baptism is the saving work of God. • God works upon a penitent, believing sinner to bring about his salvation. • Romans 6:3-4 • 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

  7. Baptism is the saving work of God. • Colossians 2:9-14 • 9For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

  8. Baptism is the saving work of God. • The work of God in baptism includes: • Spiritually burying the sinner who has died to sin • Spiritually raising up the penitent sinner to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:5-23) • Spiritually circumcising the penitent sinner as a sign of the new covenant in Christ • The work of God in baptism does what man cannot do. • Puts one into Christ and His death (Rom. 6:3) • Raises one from spiritual death into life (Rom. 6:4) • Is a circumcision made without hands (Col. 2:11) • Saves “through faith in the working of God” (Col. 2:12)

  9. Baptism is the saving work of God. • Baptism is done in the name of Christ. • It is the power of God that saves. • Acts 4:12 – “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” • We are to be baptized “in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19) and “in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). • There is no conflict between the work of God in baptism and salvation by grace through faith.
