  1. Tares!

  2. “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not” Malachi 3:18

  3. What happened in this parable? • Good seed was sown in a field • An enemy came and sowed tares (weeds) in the field at night • Servants noticed tares growing among the young wheat • Were the tares to be removed from the field? • Why?

  4. Who are represented by the tares? What are some of their characteristics? “In the East, men sometimes took revenge upon an enemy by strewing his newly sown fields with the seeds of some noxious weed that…closely resembled wheat. Springing up with the wheat, it injured the crop and brought trouble and loss to the owner of the field” ~ Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 71

  5. Abraham Lincoln once posed the question: how many legs would a dog have if you call its tail a leg? Answer: 4 – Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it one! How does that apply to today’s lesson?

  15. Usually the most obvious perils aren’t as damaging as the subtle deceptions; and an “inside job” can be more devastating than an attack from an enemy. Have you known anyone who left the faith because of hypocrites in the church? Could this be a tool of Satan to weaken the true church? What did God say should be done with the tares? Matthew 13:29-30 Why?

  16. Separating the Wheat from the Tares What should you do if suspect someone is a “tare”? Try to get them to leave the church? Treat them unkindly? Gossip about them? Pray for them?

  17. Separating the Wheat from the Tares Can you know who is and who isn’t a tare? Jeremiah 17:9 James 4:11-12 Matthew 7:1 1 Corinthians 4:3 What should you do? Philippians 2:12

  18. Distinguishing the Wheat from the Tares Who can do this? What does the Bible say? 1 Samuel 16:7 Jeremiah 17:10

  19. What is the fate of the tares? Matthew 13:40-42 What is the fate of the wheat? Matthew 13:43 Character determines destiny. Did you love and obey God, or were the things of the world too precious for you to give up?

  20. Satan’s methods to accomplish his plan: Revelation 12:17 “The dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring” Revelation 13:12 “It exercises all the authority of the first beast and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast” John 15:20 “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” Genesis 3:13 Revelation 12:9 “the deceiver of the whole world”

  21. God’s methods: Psalm 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!” Isaiah 1:18 “Come and let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” Jeremiah 31:3 “Behold I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn you.”

  22. The Tares Matthew 7:19-23 “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” “Not everyone whe says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father” “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ “

  23. The Wheat Matthew 25:34-36 “Come you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry, and you gave Me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.” What we do for Jesus through love and a willing heart will receive an exceedingly rich reward! Is there anything more precious and valuable than that? Why not give up the deceitfulness of the world for the riches of Christ today?
