  1. Applying Logistical Networking to Content Delivery RNP's Digital Video Working Group

  2. Collaboration Logistical Computing and Internetworking Laboratory University of Tennessee Dr. Micah Beck Laboratórios Associados de Vídeo Digital Universidade Federal da Paraíba Dr. Guido Lemos

  3. RNP’s Digital Video Working Group Objective: build a CDN that supports the capture, recovery, and transmission of video data from both live and delayed sources.

  4. Main Design Characteristics • Expandable • Block-view of data • Cascading caches • storage at RNP PoPs • Supports secure transfers • Multiple sources (replication) • Centralized redirection

  5. Source Destination HTTP File HTTP UDP UDP Cache Control RTSP/RTP RTSP/RTP IBP L-Bone Other D-VoD Server The CDN’s workhorse - server and proxy

  6. DVoD server DVoD server DVoD server Redirector Online Catalog Online Catalog 1 2 3 IBP 3 2 1 The D-VoD Service

  7. D-VoDf D-VoDf D-VoDf D-VoDi D-VoDi D-VoDi D-VoDi IBP Possible Data Paths D-VoDf : source D-VoDi : intermediary

  8. Content Publication • Data recovery based on URL • redirector address • content ID • publisher number • ascension number • encrypted/clear • live/delayed • format • protocols • sources

  9. Content Publication • Every object published must have an associated URL • Supports batch publication (requires data file) • For delayed transmission, a publisher can store the data on local disk, in IBP depots, or both

  10. Data Management GAINS OBSTACLES Plenty of space (lors_upload) Replication and replication threshold (lors_augment) exNode maintenance (lors_trim) Allocation maintenance (lors_refresh)

  11. Data Management More IBP depots in the RNP = more reliable service Bundled with D-VoDi deployments (open) Bundled with D-VoDf installations (restricted) L-Bone contributors in Brazil/S. America

  12. Future Work Better use of Logistical Networking • Develop relationship between replication and popularity/demand • Apply current caching policies to IBP allocations • Allow publishers to provide direct access to exNodes
