  1. MY NEIGHBOURHOOD ILISSIA – HILTON DISTRICT MARINA PAGAKI–SKALIORA

  2. THE LOCATION LYCABETTUS HILL MEGARON SYNTAGMA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

  3. THE NAME • The name «Ilissia» is from the river «Ilissos». Ilisos River was covered in 1955 and now instead we see Mihalakopoulou Rd. Ilissia is at the east side of the centre of Athens and is near Ampelokipous, Goudi, Zografou, Kesariani and Pangrati, that are all nearby. The north part of Ilissia, part of Zografou, and the west part is often called «Hilton District».

  4. Ilissos and Iridanos Rivers

  5. 60 YEARS AGO… ILISSOS RIVER AND ILISSIA

  6. HISTORY • Many hundreds of years ago Ilissia was called «Kouponia». • Then, in 1848 the Duchess of Plakendia built a mansion near Ilissos River known as the “IlissiaMansion”. Today it is the Byzantine Museum. • From 1830 until 1960 Ilissia had the royal stables where they kept the horses of the King’s guard. • Vasilisis Sofias was the main street that connected the centre of Athens (Syntagma Square) and the northern suburbs.

  7. HISTORY • Because Ilissia was uninhabited and the land was very cheap they built large hospitals. Evagelismos, Syngrou, Eginitio, Areteio and Alexandras were all built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

  8. HOSPITALS

  9. SYNGROU PARK (ALSOS SYNGROU)

  10. Agios Haralambos Church &Syngrou Park • Syngrou Park was created by Queen Sophia in 1909 and was part of the Syngrou Hospital where the patients could take a walk and not be disturbed by strangers. In the park there was a small wooden church, the church of Agios Haralambos, and there was no money to rebuild it. In 1952 it became the main church of Ilissia and in 1956 they started to build a new bigger one which was completed in 1992.

  11. Daily Life • For young children there are playgrounds in the park and basketball fields. There is also a Dance School. • For a morning coffee or an afternoon relaxation time there is a Starbucks Coffee Shop and Goodys for the “fast food” fans.

  12. Night Life • There are a few clubs and bars that people go on Fridays and Saturdays nights to have fun. The most popular is Nostos Bar where lots of school proms take place. There are also small pubs and music bars for a more quiet evening.

  13. HILTON HOTEL • The Hilton Hotel is a important landmark of Athens, located in the west part of Ilissia. It was built during 1958-1963. It was a symbol of the economical and cultural development and progressiveness of the time. • It is a 14-storey building with a curved shape, and its façade has carvings by the famous artist GiannisMoralis.

  14. MEGARO MOUSIKIS • MegaroMousikis was built 20 years ago and is located on Vasilisis Sofias Avenue next to the American Embassy. It is a large and imposing building that reminds people of the beauty of music and art. It is a fabulous piece of architecture.
