  2. Making Blood Cells • Blood cells are made in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy material in the center of the bones that produces about 95 percent of the body's blood cells. • The lymph nodes, spleen, and liver help regulate the production, destruction, and differentiation (developing a specific function) of cells.

  3. The 4 blood types are: • A • B • AB • O Each blood type may be positive + or negative -

  4. Blood Cells • Red blood cells ** Live about 120 days. ** Look like a lifesaver with the center closed ** Are made in bone marrow, spleen and other sites. Most come from the bone marrow.

  5. White blood cells • White Blood Cells *The primary function of white blood cells, or leukocytes, is to fight infection. *heal wounds not only by fighting infection, but also by ingesting matter, such as dead cells, tissue debris, and old red blood cells. *each microliter of blood has 5,000 to 10,000 white blood cells.

  6. Platelets • Platelets are much smaller in size than the other blood cells. They group together to form clumps, or a plug, in the hole of a vessel to stop bleeding. • Platelets are irregularly-shaped, colorless bodies that are present in blood.

  7. Sickle Cells • Sickle Cell Anemia is the name given to persons having sickle cells. • Sickle Cells are not round, and don’t carry oxygen as well as normal cells ** Normal red blood cells contain hemoglobin A, but people with sickle cell disease have mostly hemoglobin S (the S stands for sickle) in their red blood cells...
