  14. The College of Computer Science and Technology, Jilin University • Founded in 1976 by Prof. Xianghao Wang, a world famous mathematician, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences • One of the earliest institutions that endeavor to research on computer science and technology in China. • Its main fields of interest include Artificial Intelligence, Distributed System, Computer Network, Intelligent Programming, Automated Reasoning, Knowledge Engineering, Agent System, Software Engineering and Software Automation, Computer Graphics, etc.

  15. The college is one of the largest computer colleges in the country • In May 2001, the former College of Computer Science and Technology, Jilin University merged with • Department of Computer Engineering and Technology, Jilin University of Technology • Department of Computer Science, Changchun University of Science and Technology • Department of Computer Science, Changchun Post and Telecommunication Institute • Currently, the college has • 2719 undergraduates, 772 postgraduates and 208 doctoral candidates. • 194 faculty members, including 39 professors, 50 associateprofessors • one member of Chinese Academy of Sciences

  16. One of the top-tier institutions in China • In 1981, the college became one of the first institutions authorized to offer Computer Software PhD program in China • In 1985, the college became one of the first institutions authorized to found the post-doctoral research center • In 1987, Computer Software program offered by the college was honored as one of the Key Disciplinesof the nation • In 1993, the Open Lab of Symbolic Computation and Knowledge Engineering directly administered by the State Education Commission was founded.

  17. One of the top-tier institutions in China • In 1999, the Key Lab of Computer Communications directly sponsored by the Ministry of Information Industry was established. • In 2002, the discipline of Computer and Software Science and Information Processing was funded by national “Tenth five-year plan” 211 project as key discipline. • In 2002, the discipline of Computer Software and Theory was honored as the Key Discipline of the nation again. • In 2004, the college was authorized to found S&T Innovation Platform of ‘Computing and Software Science’ funded by the national “985” project.

  18. Recent research activities • Projects • In the recent five years, the college has finished 110 projects supported by CNSF, national “973” high-tech program, national “863” high-tech program and so on, the funds obtained are about RMB 60 million Yuan in total. • There are 45 under-going projects funded by government, the total funding is about 45 million RMB Yuan.

  19. Recent research activities • Awards In the past five years, the college has won more than 20 awards from the government, like • Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award • Special Prize by Electronic Ministry • “Ninth five-year plan” National Key Science and Technology Projects Award • First prize for Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress, • Etc. • Publications • More than 900 papers • 24 books/monographs

  20. International Collaboration • Our college has established collaborative relationships with many universities and institutes like: • Research Center of Cooperation, West Virginian University, USA. • Research Institute of High Performance Computation, Singapore • Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore • Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University ofBritish Columbia, Canada • Platform Computing Inc, Canada • UCSD, US • AIST, Japan • Automation & Computer Aided Engineering Dept, Chinese University of Hong Kong, • etc

  21. International Collaboration • The college has signed agreements to establish people training programs with world famous IT companies, such as • IBM, Microsoft, ORACLE, SUN, HP, Ricoh and BEA, etc. • International Conferences • In July, 2005, the college hosted the International Bioinformatics Workshop; more than 200 representatives from abroad and China attended the conference • etc

  22. Recent Research Activities on Grid Computing • The College started its research on grid computing since 2000, however, the research on high performance computing dated back to 1980. • The College started to collaborate with UCSD (US), AIST (Japan) and Platform Inc (Ca) from 2003 in the fields of grid computing and middleware. • From 2004 to 2005, working with Platform the College delivered the WSRF based CSF (Community Scheduler Framework) as a contribution component of GT4. • To provide a grid test bed for data-intensive applications like iGap, JLU, UCSD and AIST are working at integrating meta-scheduler (CSF), local scheduler (LSF/SGE) and Gfarm.

  23. Recent Research Activities on Grid Computing • From 2005, JLU started to get involved in the Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experience by sending students and faculty members to UCSD. • Another on-going co-research project between JLU and Platform is aiming at developing a grid operating system prototype. • Project Funded by CNSF • To research the methods to monitor and evaluate the execution performance of grid applications

  24. Community Scheduler Framework 4.0 – CSF4 • What is CSF • Full name: Community Scheduler Framework • CSF is a meta-scheduler working at grid level • The first version of CSF, CSF3, was developed based on GT3-OGSI, contributed by Platform (a CA software company/LSF) • CSF4 is the GT4-WSRF compliant version of CSF, providing the same functionalities as CSF3 • CSF is an open source project and can be accessed at http://sourceforge.net (the cvs mainline code is csf4) • The development team of CSF4 is from Jilin University

  25. Community Scheduler Framework 4.0 – CSF4 CSF4 is a contribution to GT4

  26. CSF4 – Architecture

  27. Implementing Data Aware Scheduling in Gfarm using LSF Plug-in Mechanism Motivations • Data-intensive jobs are drawing more attentions • iGap - UCSD/NBCR (Dr. Wilfred W. Li) • Gfarm – (a data grid middleware , AIST Dr. Osamu,) Gfarm is a global parallel file system and provides a single file system image to the users • Like most data grid software, gfarm needs a job queuing and scheduling mechanism • Manual method to locate data-affinity hosts and manage data is not scalable (Gfarm – gfrun/mpirun, without job queuing) • Conflicts between users • Load imbalance

  28. Data aware Scheduling • Job scheduling (move job to data) • Put jobs in the queues • Find the best hosts for gfarm jobs • Constraint the number of running jobs to access a data replica • Data management (move data to jobs) • create new data replicas when the job load is high • Find the host location based on job resource requirement • Avoid generating multiple large data replicas within one scheduling session • delete the obsolete data replicas automatically

  29. Using the LSF scheduler plug-in mechanism • No need to write a job scheduler from scratch • Be able to work with other scheduler policies like FCFS, fair-share, preemption, backfill, etc.

  31. Plan For Near Future • Continue working on the integration of CSF, local schedulers and gfarm together with UCSD/AIST etc. • Add more features to CSF • support array job • support work flow (job dependency) • support web service jobs • support resource reservations

  32. Apply PRAGMA Membership • To build the strong collaborative relationships with world leading institutes and universities is a high priority of our college • We are going to enhance and extend the existence collaborations with PRAGMA in the fields of Grid Computing and Bioinformatics etc • We are willing to be a institutional member of PRAGMA • We are willing tohost future PRAGMA workshops
