Branch, MD • Intense one-week summer workshop for 24 students (10th to 11th) • West Virginia University • Topic = community-based clinical research, research ethics, and clinical study design. • Ethics-based modules for all teachers and students (n=150). • With oversight from the WVU and CTSI clinical research mentors • HSTA students drafted protocols and consent forms • Worked with West Virginia University’s Institutional Board for approval. • Fall ’08 – Spring ’08 HSTA-SEPA science club CBPR students • Participants provided written informed consent for access to confidential health care information on obesity, diabetes and attitudes toward interventions to modify food choices and exercise • 1241 study participants were enrolled

  9. Community Based Clinical Research An Untapped Opportunity Ann Chester, PHD, Robert A. Branch, MD • BMI = 0.85 age corrected • BMI of 25.5 = 6% developed diabetes. • BMI = 1.05 age corrected • BMI = 31.5 = 16% (2.5X) • BMI = 1.38 age corrected • BMI = 41.4 = 22% (3.7X) • >50% of this study population has BMI >30 • High prevalence of diabetes in their communities • Student CBCR study results: High BMI Diabetes • Serious motivation for these students to plan and conduct intervention strategies.
