  2. PRE-LISTENING AFTER LISTENING, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO ANSWER THE QUESTION: WHAT DID THEY SEE ON THE BRIDGE? HOW MUCH EQUIPMENT CAN YOU LIST?

  3. PRE-LISTENING Yang: Second Officer, can you please make a brief introduction about the bridge? S.Off: With pleasure. Let's start with the navigational instruments installed here. Look, there are so many this side. Yang: Tell us the important ones first. S.Off: Right. There you see, this is a Loran C and that is a marine radar.

  4. PRE-LISTENING We can see its antenna on top of the bridge. This is the steering wheel, and this instrument is called GPS①. It's a satellite positioning navigator. Zhou: What do the letters GPS stand for? S.Off: They stand for Global Positioning System.

  5. PRE-LISTENING Yang: Oh, I remember we learnt it at college. Zhou: What is that instrument? S.Off: That's a sextant. Zhou: What for? S.Off: It's used to observe the azimuth of celestial bodies.

  6. PRE-LISTENING Zhou: I see. What are these meters on the controlling desk? S.Off: Well, they are various recorders. Let me tell you one by one. This is the speed-recorder, (pointing) the course-recorder, the distance- recorder —— Zhou: Have you got ARPA ② on board?

  7. PRE-LISTENING S.Off: Yes, there it is. This system makes navigation much easier. I think you learnt how to use it before. Yang: Yes. By the way, is this vessel equipped with GMDSS?③ S.Off: Yes already, I’ll show you later. Yang: What about ECDIS? ④

  8. PRE-LISTENING S.Off: No, not yet, but we intend to install one in the near future. Zhou: Why, I haven't noticed the VHF⑤ radio telephone. Yang: Look, it’s there on that wall. (Sees a clock). Hey, there's a clock on the wall, too. S.Off : Yes. We can also call it chronometer, a very accurate clock used on a ship.

  10. WHILE- READING PROCEDURES IN THE STAGE: • STUDENTS TO READ ALOUD THE DIALOGUE AFTER THE RECORDING • TEACHER TO EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANT LANGUAGE POITS WITH NECESSARY PRACTICE • TEACHER TO CHECK IF THE MATERIAL IS PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD BY VARIOUS MEANS

  11. WHILE- READING PROCEDURES IN THE STAGE: • STUDENTS TO PERFORM THE DIALOGUE BASED ON THE DIALOGUE, OR • (STUDENTS TO )ASK QUESTIONS TO EACH OTHER, AND THEN ANSWER THEM • TEACHER TO CHECK SOME SPECIFIC QUESTIONS TO CHECK COMPREHENSION • TEACHER TO PLAY BACK THE RECORDING WHERE NECESSARY

WHILE- READING LANGUAGE POINTS ① GPS or G.P.S.: Global Positioning System, 全球定位系统. ② ARPA: Automatic Radar Plotting Aid, 自动雷达标绘仪. ③ GMDSS: global Maritime Safety Distress System,全球海上安全系统. ④ ECDIS: Electronic Chart Display Information System, 电子海图显示信息系统 ⑤ Why: 这里是语气词,用来提醒对方或表示惊讶等。VHF: Very High Frequency, (无线电) 甚高频

  13. POST- LISTENING Make Up Short Dialogues Using Words Offered In the Boxes: 1. A: May I come in? have a few words with ... B: Come in, please. report a matter to Captain B: What can I do for you? check the repair list with C/O A: I'd like to ... know how the engine runs B: With pleasure / No problem ask you a question 2. A: Where are you going? the bridge / see the Captain B: I'm going to ... the engine room / have a check A: What for? the city / do some shopping B: I want to ... the bathroom / take a shower the deck / stand on watch

  14. POST- LISTENING Interpreting the Following Dialogue : A: 能进来吗? B: 请进。 A: 对不起,打扰了。 B: 没关系,我能帮你忙吗? A: 你能教我怎样操作这台机器吗? B: 非常乐意。让我示范给你看。

  15. POST- LISTENING A: 怎样关闭机器? B: 瞧,这是电源开关,那些是控制钮。 A: 啊,明白了。谢谢你的帮助。 B: 不用谢, 还有事吗? A: 是的,我能在海图室查阅一下资料? B: 什么资料? A: 我想看1105号英版海图。 B: 没问题,海图在桌子内。 A: 我想我不会在那里呆很久的。你正在值班了望吧? B: 不,我正在写航海日志。
