  1. 2nd Low Energy Working Group MeetingCERN, July 21, 2008 The Advanced Example Working Group http://geant4advancedexampleswg.wikispaces.com/ G.A.P. Cirrone, PhD INFN-LNS on behalf of the AE WG G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  2. Mission • Members • Examples • Which physic? • How to test the example? • Connection with other WG • Dissemination • Interaction with the Users • Future examples … G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  3. WHY THE ADVANCED EXAMPLE WORKING GROUP? Investigate, evaluate and demonstrate Geant4 capabilities in various experimental environments Provide guidance to Geant4 users in realistic experimental applications Provide feedback to Geant4 developers about successful results, problems etc. Identify requirements for further Geant4 improvements and extensions to address new experimental domains Provide connection between developers and users of GEANT4 G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  4. ELECTION UPDATES Working group coordinator and a co-coordinator: G.A.P. Cirrone – INFN/LNS and S. Incerti – IN2P3/CENBG 19 members belong to this working group 20 examples actually maintained G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  5. ELECTION UPDATES Among these members were cancelled from the collaboration but they still want to contribute: we asked to the the SB to approve their return in the Geant4 collaboration : S. Guatelli, B.Mascialino, M. Piergentili. Guatelli wishes to contribute to Brachytherapy, Humanphantom, Radioprotection and Hadrontherapy examples. Piergentili is disposal to give a small contribute to the Med_Linac example. B. Mascialino wishes to give a contribute in hadrontherapy. Araujo Henrique wrote an e-mail stating he is not more disposal to contribute to the Group. For this the example cosmicray_charging is at the moment without a responsible Bernardo Tome wrote that he is still disposal to contribute to the air_shower example with a small FTE G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  6. ELECTION UPDATES Member list, July 2008 G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  7. WEB SITE AND MAILING LIST o A new Advanced Example web page have been created and it is hosted at CERN in the official Geant4 web pages: www.cern.ch/geant4 From this page a link to a more detailed page have been fixed:http://geant4advancedexampleswg.wikispaces.com/ o Links to the old web site still remain in the Geant4 documentation. Katsuya was already contacted order to changes the old link with new links that will point on the new CERN based pages. The update is expected in the December release o The ownership of mailing list (geant4-advanced-examples@cern.ch) was transferred to G.A.P.Cirrone and S.Incerti. It was updated with the current members. G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  8. ADVANCED EXAMPLES WIKI PAGES G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  9. EXAMPLE STATUS Status of the examples At moment 20 examples are published inside Geant4. We prepared a web page were the general status of the example (in terms of compilation and/or run errors with the last Geant4 version) is reported. The page is linked also from the official CERN web page so that users can better understand the status of the examples. Responsible of each example showing errors will be directly contacted by-email Analisys We plan to face out one of the users’ most request issue:a simpler and clear way to extract output from the examples (explain how to use ROOT without AIDA, ASCII data format…..) Progress on this will be discussed and reported in the next months. G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  10. WHAT CHANCE EXAMPLE CAN PROVIDE? • Wide experimental coverage: • HEP • Space science/astrophysics • Medical physics • Radiobiology • Detector technologies • Wide Geant4 coverage • Geometry features • Magnetic field • Physics (EM and hadronic) • Biological processes • Hits & Digis • Analysis • Visualisation, UI G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  11. WHAT PHYSIC EXAMPLE CAN PROVIDE? G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  12. ACTUAL SITUATION OF THE EXAMPLE PHYSIC Physics Lists in Advanced Examples • PhysicsLists • Ad hoc in most examples: transparent, easy to understand but it is safe? • A couple of examples use pre-packaged Geant4 PhysicsLists • Goal: document quantitatively the validation of the physics selections of all advanced examples • Objectively supported physics options were preferred to the “educated guess” PhysicsLists • Future: • Validation studies of processes/models used • Validation studies with “ad hoc” experimental data • Encourage the introduction of the physic lists providing users a set of optimal option G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  13. HOW ARE EXAMPLE TESTED ? Actually only few examples are inside the system testing procedure of Geant4 test1002 = examples/advanced/microbeamtest1004  = examples/advanced/nanobeamtest1008  = examples/advanced/cosmicray_charging/ test???? = examples/advanced/microdosimetry We would like to expand this subset at least including the more significative examples (in terms of geometry, physic, etc) if, of course, developers agree….. We will discuss this with the System Testing responsible in the next months providing a concrete proposal To encourage the developers to create home-made ‘test suite’ in order to keep under control main parameters of the code after each release G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  14. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Cooperation with the other working group is fundamental and must be improved Dissemination of ‘real case’ experiment can improve the confidence of the Users with Geant4 AE (and example in general of course) represent an important line of contact between Users and the Collaboration G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  15. FUTURE….. • A big improvement of the Medical Linac example is expected in the next year • The possibility to develop an example reproducing a Compute Tomography system is under discussion with the Tourin Group of the Italian Geant4 Collaboration • The possibility to introduce new examples related to new external radiotherapy modalities is under discussion (Gamma Knife and IORT) G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA

  16. Thank you for your attention G.A.P. Cirrone PhD, cirrone@lns.infn.it Laboratori Nazionali del Sud CATANIA
