What Is Harm Reduction Where It Concerns Smoking And Tobacco Use

Harm reduction, or the idea of harm reduction, first reared its head about illegal drugs. The term refers to certain programs and policies that aim to reduce the negative effects or the harm, that addictive behaviors cause individuals, their society, and the immediate community in which they reside and operate. The goal of CSUR is to ensure that those working within these industries have access to high-quality behavioural research that can further theirs owns goals of reducing the harms associated with the use of combustible tobacco products. 1. What Is Harm Reduction Where It Concerns What Is Harm Reduction Where It Concerns Smoking And Tobacco Use? Smoking And Tobacco Use? Tobacco has always been a part of our lives, even if you don’t smoke or use tobacco products, the chances are very high that you either have friends or family members who smoke or that you regularly encounter smokers or tobacco users either at your place or work or in public spaces. Nowadays, although tobacco use and smoking decline in popularity year on year, novel products have hit the market and are encouraging young people, especially, to take up smoking as a pastime. These items include things like e-cigarettes and other heated tobacco products. These products are seen as alternatives to traditional cigarette smoking and a lot of research is being done on whether or not they can help in the reduction of harmful tobacco usage. Harm reduction, or the idea of harm reduction, first reared its head about illegal drugs. The term refers to certain programs and policies that aim to reduce the negative effects or the harm, that addictive behaviors cause individuals, their society, and the immediate community in which they reside and operate. In an ideal world, abstinence would be the aim, but unfortunately, this is not always possible and therefore that is not the immediate goal. Therefore, harm reduction tends to focus instead on reducing not the use of tobacco or other harmful products, but the harm it causes. Harm reduction when it comes to tobacco or the use of tobacco is linked to the reduction of the morbidity levels, thereby meaning the number of diseases it causes, as well as the mortality levels, thereby meaning the number of deaths it causes. This is usually only focused on active smokers or tobacco users, and not on secondhand smokers. Although you would most effectively reduce harm by eliminating nicotine use, this is not an immediately achievable objective, and that is why it is more important to focus on reducing the harm it causes people instead of trying to get people to quit using altogether. Therefore, active harm reduction will focus on persuading people to opt for less harmful nicotine sources. The reason why people smoke or use tobacco products is that they get addicted to nicotine. However, nicotine by itself is not necessarily all that harmful, it is all the additional products in tobacco items that cause disease and untimely death. Research has also been done on more novel tobacco items such as e-cigarettes. There have been numerous studies stating that e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes and there has been a lot of support stating that e-cigarettes can even help smokers quit smoking traditional cigarettes, which are considered to be the most harmful. However, it should be noted that e-cigarettes themselves are not without risk and do cause harm and that they may even encourage the youth to smoke or take up smoking as they come in a variety of flavors.

  2. The most important thing to understand regarding harm reduction is that it aims to encourage smokers and those that use tobacco products to switch to less harmful tobacco products. Harm reduction also takes into account the societal harm that smoking causes and by implementing designated smoking areas and suchlike, the harm it causes the general population can also be greatly reduced. Smoking and tobacco use is not a novel concept, it has been around for hundreds of years and will likely still be with us for some time. However, what can currently be done is the active implementation of harm reduction practices and policies to ensure that the morbidity and mortality levels continue to decrease and that the number of smokers and tobacco users per annum decreases or switches to less harmful products. About Us: CSUR opened in 1994 linked initially to the University of Glasgow where its foundational director held the post of Professor of Substance Use Research. In 2011 CSUR became a wholly independent research centre focusing on a wider range of substance use issues and developing a large program of behaviourally focused regulatory science research assessing the contribution of ENDS in reducing tobacco-related health harm. The research team within CSUR has experience in working alongside regulatory authorities including the FDA to ensure that the studies executed can meet the needs of regulatory and public health bodies. CSUR as an organization is focussed on furthering the goals of tobacco-related harm reduction and assessing the public health impact of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems. The goal of CSUR’s staff is to ensure that those working within these industries have access to high-quality behavioural research that can further theirs owns goals of reducing the harms associated with the use of combustible tobacco products.
