Smoking Cessation – What Are The Health Benefits? Harm reduction strategies and tobacco research are identifying any health benefits associated with smoking cessation. Are there instant benefits and long-term benefits of stopping smokers for every single smoker in the world? Research on smoking has identified that benefits start from as little as twenty minutes to sixteen years and more. Within twenty minutes your blood pressure and heart rate drop, twelve hours, and the carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal levels, while within twenty weeks circulation improves, along with an increase in lung function. The irritating smoker's cough and shortness of breath decrease within one to nine months and the risk of coronary heart disease are halved within a year. By the time you get to sixteen years of not smoking, your risk of lung cancer is reduced, and your risk of heart disease is reduced to the same as a non-smoker. When a smoker has a heart attack, stopping smoking reduces the risk of another by fifty percent. The problem is that tobacco leads to addiction and health problems Quitting reduces the risk of developing these serious and sometimes fatal diseases, such as lung cancer, stroke, and heart attack. Nicotine dependence requires more than one treatment to help patients quit, which is why smoking cessation is providing highly effective. The good news is that the number of former smokers is slowly increasing over the current smokers. It's not uncommon for smokers to want to stop, they just cannot get past their urge to smoke, thanks to the nicotine content. This is why UK companies that import any tobacco products must get approval before they can introduce their product, ensuring that it meets the countries strict tobacco and nicotine laws. Sixty-eight percent of smokers had the desire to quit in 2015 with fifty-five percent stating they had tried to quit in the past year, but fewer than one in ten succeed. 7.5% of smokers were successful at quitting in 2018 with four out of every nine using a health professional but didn't receive advice to quit. Smoking cessation products are readily available and highly effective in getting people out of the habit of smoking tobacco-related products. Fifty-seven percent of those that had seen a professional in the past year had received information and advice on quitting. The problem is less than one-third of smokers make use of cessation counselling and medications, which have been approved to assist with stopping smoking effectively. Only thirty- one percent made use of the smoking cessation products and services when trying to quit. Just over six percent used counselling, twenty-nine percent used medication and four percent used both. This increased quitting rates to three out of five successfully stopping smoking cigarettes. The increase in interest to stop smoking has grown year on year. Sixty-one percent of smokers had stopped in 2018. At the same time, the younger smokers are also looking at stopping with half having tried to quit in the past year.
Children in high school using tobacco products in 2019 had fifty-seven percent wanting to quit. In the next year, fifty-seven percent that had smoked has stopped for one day or longer. Through rigorous research on tobacco and harm reduction strategies, more people can reduce their nicotine dependence and move on to become ex-smokers.
