  1. H How ow to become a voice over artist to become a voice over artist. . If you wanted to be a doctor, lawyer or plumber you would have a clear career path to follow, exams to take, practical experience to gain, and professional bodies to join. The road map to your chosen job would be well defined and structured. If you had not achieved your dream by a certain age, you would probably have to give up. But what if you wanted to do voice overs for a living, or even part time? Say you harbored a dream to narrate children's stories, do animation and video game voices, or introduce your favourite TV programs - where on earth would you start? There is no career path here, no academic courses at colleges or university; even a drama syllabus may not cover such a niche interest. In the voice over world, there is no one size fits all job: you can't be too old, too posh, or too common; every voice style has a market from child through to senior and everything in between. Confusingly it all seems, well, so

  2. vague and obscure. It is as though 'planet voice over' were a far off place, impregnable, self-contained and elitist. However people (yes ordinary people) do become voice over performers. They are not necessarily actors or radio professionals; they come from all walks of life and bring skills and experience from the real world that enrich their delivery. So where, exactly, do you start? First, forget the idea that you have to possess a great sounding voice. It's like art: one person's Mona Lisa is another's pile of bricks. In other words totally subjective. Reading and specifically reading out loud, is the most important quality. It is how you bring a script (that is somebody else's words) to life. Practice makes perfect, so the more you read aloud the better. Lock yourself away in a quiet room and try reading short extracts from magazines, newspapers, novels, in fact anything you can lay your hands on. You could even try writing your own scripts, which will give you an insight into how a client sells a product or idea. Then you will need to record a show reel. This will become your audio calling card - without it no one will know what you sound like. Keep your scripts short and add variety into the mix. That means commercials (from upbeat to

  3. soft) audiobook narration, a corporate/business type read, interactive phone message and (this is optional and only for the seriously talented) character voice montage. You can hire a local studio for a few hours, record at home if you have the facilities, or ask a professional trainer to help you. After this comes the really hard part: promoting your reel (which should be on CD and perhaps a website too). You could approach voice over agents, but many of these will want experience first before considering representing you. You can achieve this by signing up to the numerous voiceover marketplaces that can be found on the web. They offer a chance for voice talents to show off their wares and meet potential clients, do auditions and most importantly get those jobs. So it may be too late to become an astronaut, but your dreams of a career in voice overs are not out of this world. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/2455779

  4. Voice Over Work Voice Over Work - - Is My Voice Suitable? Is My Voice Suitable? Many people want to do voice overs, but wonder whether or not their voice is suitable. But what do we mean by the term 'suitable'? In a sense asking if your voice is suitable is only half the question - suitable for what? Voice overs come in many forms, so you need to rephrase the question and be more specific. You could ask: "is my voice suitable for on-hold voicemail messages?" or "could I do radio ads?" or what about "I wonder if my voice is right for audiobooks?" There are as many variations as there are types of voice over. However, even asking these sorts of questions is not enough to gauge the suitability of your voice. Voice overs are only partly about the sound of voice. Of far greater importance is what you do with it. By this I mean how you bring words to life; voiceovers are all about giving texture and color to the words on a page. It is no good being told you have an appealing voice (whatever that is!) if you

  5. have difficulty breathing life into the text in front of you. You need to be able to take a script (usually belonging to the client who is paying you!) and make the words sound like they are coming from you. It needs to sound 'said' rather than 'read'. Still interested? Then ask yourself the following questions: • Am I willing to practice to improve my reading out loud? • Could I run a small business, selling my voice over services? • Would I be prepared to invest time and money promoting my voice? • Do I take rejection personally? • Am I prepared to learn new skills such as recording at home? If you have been answering 'no' to some of the above, then voice overs are probably not for you. Jobs can be competitive and you have to be prepared to work hard; if you are not one for learning new skills, or if you are a person who gives up easily then it might be best to consider doing something else.

  6. However, if you have been intrigued and perhaps even inspired by what voice over work might entail, then I would suggest taking it further. Voice overs can be very rewarding, not only financially but also in the freedom they give you. To begin with, you will be freelance (unless you sign up for a staff contract with a TV or radio station) and that means you are your own boss. You can work from home too; these days the internet and keenly priced recording equipment provide a means to send a high quality recording to anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home. Imagine that; no travel, a big difference to your life and most of important of all, doing something that is incredibly good fun. Now that is something worth being suitable for! 7. MAKE MONEY WITH YOUR VOICE MAKE MONEY WITH YOUR VOICE What you need to break into the industry is a well- produced demo; this is a demonstration of your potential performing various scripts. It shows producers & voice agents what you sound like and what you are capable of; it is, in effect, your portfolio or 'audio CV'. Your demo should include the following: commercials, trailers (or promos, as they are sometimes called), announcing and narration - which is anything from audio books to a documentary read, via an on-hold telephone message. Voice-overs are made up of three elements: 1) The sound of your voice - its 'timbre' 2) The way you interpret a script and 3) Marketing. All are important, but your first priority should be to record that demo (in CD and/or mp3 format) and showcase your natural voice quality, along with the unique way YOU

  8. bring a script to life. But hey, what if you are not used to reading aloud? Practice at home and read anything and everything; news articles, magazine pieces.....even children's stories. Try and match your voice style to the appropriate scripts - it's no good a soft, gentle voice being used for a powerful, hard sell ad! Ask yourself: "what do I sound like? Am I posh, urban, or light/deep voiced?" It is what you sound like that is important, not who you are. When it comes to experience, you have to bear in mind that each job you take on will be new; I attend sessions where I have never seen the script before and am completely unfamiliar with the style of reading required. All voice-over artists have to rely on the audio producer to guide them in the right direction to achieve the desired performance. Experience in this business is learnt on the job, but you have to start somewhere and that is why it is a good idea to have a demo, showcasing your potential. You could even make it at home using your computer, a mic and a sound card. 'Voice-over' is a broad umbrella term covering many different jobs from voicing ads, TV announcing, narrating

  9. documentaries and corporate videos right through to voice prompts and on-hold phone messages, interactive media, podcasting and everything in between. So the range of work is highly diverse and the job of an agent, producer or Production Company is to match the voice with the project; your voice demo effectively becomes your audition piece in this process. You will be successful at some, but not others; it all depends on what they are listening for. Then start marketing. It's all about the blood, sweat and tears of sending your work out to as many agents, production companies and producers as possible. It is no good having a fantastic demo if it just sits on your bookshelf! So now it's time to get recording and let the world hear what you sound like. Good luck!
