ALS History • The Barlow & Seelig Manufacturing Company was founded in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1908 by Joe Barlow and John Seelig • The first shop was located behind a hardware store in Ripon, Wisconsin • Our first Hand Powered washer was called the “White Cloud” • Salesmen traveled by railroad and sold a “Baker’s Dozen” 13 units for $96 White Cloud

  4. ALS History • The Company made an impressive $20,000 the first year • Our first facility was quickly outgrown so operations were moved to our present day location

  5. ALS History • From 1908 to 1928 several different brand names were used “White Cloud”, “National”, and “Big Three”. • In 1928 a new machine was christened as “Speed Queen” and the brand name was adopted National Speed Queen Big 3

ALS History • Early Company Innovations • 1911 – Our first washer powered by an electric motor is produced • 1915 – The first wringer developed that could operate in either direction • 1922 – The first double-walled tub created to hold water heat and protect the inner copper tub • 1939 – The industry’s first stainless steel wash tub makes it’s debut in a Speed Queen

  7. ALS History The Depression 1929-1939 • Company enjoys phenomenal growth despite the Great Depression • 30 to 40 of our competitors were driven out of the washing machine business

  8. ALS History World War II Years 1942 – 1945 • Manufactured Aircraft Parts • 20 mm Artillery Shells • Aircraft Generators • Worked around the clock 7 days a week

  9. ALS History • 1949 –The Barlow and Seelig Co. is renamed the Speed Queen Corporation • 1953 – The first Speed Queen Automatic Home Washer is produced • 1956 - Speed Queen merges with McGraw Edison Co. one of the largest firms in the electrical industry 1st Speed Queen Automatic Washer

  10. ALS History • 1957 - Speed Queen developed it’s first coin washer & dryer • 1960 - McGraw Edison Co. purchases American Laundry Machinery • 1962 - Speed Queen produces coin op Dry Cleaning machine

ALS History • 1969 - 70 - Speed Queen begins production of Wringers and Small Dryers at new Searcy, Ark plant • 1977 – Speed Queen exceeds $100 million in sales for the first time • 1978 - Speed Queen merges with Huebsch Originators from the American Laundry Machinery Division and is renamed American Laundry Division

ALS History • 1979 - McGraw Edison sells Speed Queen and Huebsch Originators to the Raytheon Corporation • 1979 Raytheon renames the division “Speed Queen Company” • 1988 - Raytheon Appliances formed • 1989 - Amana is named Marketing Headquarters for Raytheon Appliance Group • 1991 - Raytheon Appliances sells all Ripon produced home laundry products through the Amana brand • 1994 - Raytheon purchases the Unimac Co. in Marianna, Florida

  13. ALS History • 1997 - Raytheon sells Amana Appliances to Goodman Holdings • A non compete clause is signed preventing Speed Queen from selling home laundry until 2004

  14. ALS History • 1998 - Raytheon sells the Speed Queen Company to Bain Capital • 1998 - Alliance Laundry Systems LLC formed • 2000 - ALS purchases Ajax from American Laundry Machinery

ALS History • 2001 - ALS combines all factories into Two • Ripon - Small Chassis, Horizon and all Tumblers • Marianna - Washer Extractors and Ajax • Madisonville, KY tumbler plant and Cincinnati, OH Ajax plant are closed and production is consolidated in Ripon, Wisconsin and Marianna, Florida.

  16. ALS History • August 2003, Alliance introduces new Chest & Heated Roll line of flatwork finishers • October 2004, home laundry non compete clause expires with Amana’s Goodman Holdings. Speed Queen has the option to reenter the home laundry market in the US
