  1. Your Questions Answered Pancreatic Cancer:

  2. What Does the Pancreas Do? The pancreas is responsible for the production of insulin, as well as other hormones which help to store and use glucose from the food we consume. This glandular organ also produces juices containing digestive enzymes, releasing these juices into the bile duct.

  3. What Is Pancreatic Cancer? The most commonly diagnosed form of pancreatic cancer begins in the lining of pancreatic ducts. A cell’s DNA instructs it to mutate (or change) and replicate. Continued replication forms a tumor. When some of these mutated cells detach from the tumor, they can be carried out of the pancreas and then spread to other areas of the body.

  4. What Are the Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer? Some pancreatic cancer symptoms include: • Jaundice • Abdominal pain • Weight loss • Loss of appetite • Nausea and vomiting Most symptoms manifest when the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.

  5. Why Are Pancreatic Cancer Screenings So Important? Regular screenings are important for more than one reason. Pancreatic cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, so screenings allow for pancreatic cancer to be detected and treated early. Early detection can allow for early treatment, better management of the disease, and better quality of life.

  6. How Is Pancreatic Cancer Screened and Diagnosed? Getting screened is the most efficient way to diagnose pancreatic cancer early. In order to determine the stage of a patient’s pancreatic cancer, screening includes blood tests, ultrasound, and pancreatic biopsy. Diagnostic testing helps determine the stage of pancreatic cancer in terms of: • The size of a tumor • Where else in the body the cancer may have spread • How far the disease has progressed in each area Getting a second opinion is something many people do to confirm an initial diagnosis. The treatment will depend on the stage of cancer that’s suspected.

  7. What are the Stages of Pancreatic Cancer? Staging is used by medical doctors to define the extent of cancer in a patient’s body. Stage 4 is diagnosed when it’s been discovered that pancreatic cancer has spread to other parts of the body. It is the stage at which cancer is considered to be the most advanced.

  8. What Are the Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Options? Treatment is suggested according to the stage of disease that’s been assigned. The treatment options available for pancreatic cancer are as follows: • Surgery to remove the tumor • Targeted therapy • Radiation therapy • Chemotherapy Treatment may also combine two or more of the above.
