8. What is the 10+1? Commonly known as the "Ten Plus One‚" (as articulated in Title 5 of the Administrative Code of California, Sections 53200) the following define "Academic and Professional matters." 1. Curriculum including establishing prerequisites and places courses within disciplines 2. Degree and certificate requirements 3. Grading policies 4. Educational program development 5. Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success 6. District and college governance structures, as related to faculty roles 7. Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes, including self-study and annual reports 8. Policies for faculty professional development activities 9. Processes for program review 10. Processes for institutional planning and budget development 11. Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon between the governing board and the academic senate

How the Academic Senate Supports FacultyProfessional Development College • Professional Development College: • Faculty experts under the direction of the ASCCC design each PDC course to provide timely training that participants can complete at their own convenience. 12. How the Academic Senate Supports Faculty:Technical Assistance • We provide technical assistance to colleges on items ranging from governance, accreditation, curriculum…anything under the 10+1 purview. http://asccc.org/services#

Academic Senate Plenary Sessions • The Academic Senate holds two plenary sessions each year in the North and South in fall and spring. • Professional development - general and breakout sessions inform attendees about hot topics, to receive new training to bolster the effectiveness of their senate. • Resolutions – Establish official ASCCC positions and direct its work. • Elections – To elect members of the Executive Committee (spring).

Resolutions Establish Official Academic Senate Positions • Academic Senate positions are established by its membership at plenary sessions through the resolutions process • Any faculty member may bring forward a resolution to Area meetings and/or plenary session • Delegates from each local senate debate and vote on resolutions

Resolutions Establish Official Academic Senate Positions • Adopted resolutions are the official collective CCC faculty position statewide. • Directs the advocacy of the Academic Senate in its dealings with statewide organizations. • Drives the work of the Executive Committee and ASCCC committees/task forces. • Inform the work of local senates as they develop local policies and procedures. http://asccc.org/resources/resolutions

Academic Senate Institutes and Regional Meetings • Professional development events centered around various topics. • Institutes – focus on general areas such as curriculum, faculty leadership, accreditation…and of course CTE! • Faculty Leadership Institute, June 14-17, Sacramento. • Curriculum Institute, July 12-15, Riverside. • Summer Part-Timer Institute, August 3-5, Anaheim. • Regional meetings – free events held around the state on specific topics of a timely nature, such as equity, equivalencies, noncredit, etc.

17. Discipline List Revisions • The Academic Senate is responsible for making recommendations to the BOG on revisions to the state Disciplines List (Ed Code Section 87357) • Minimum qualifications • New disciplines • Proposals originate from local academic senates, statewide discipline organizations • Hearings held at plenary sessions, and recommendations voted on by delegates http://asccc.org/disciplines-list

A Day in the CTE Life… In addition to everything else, if you are CTE faculty, you deal with: • Additional program review requirements. • Perkins reporting requirements. • External accreditation requirements. • Need to chase grants…to maintain programs. • Higher teaching loads than non-CTE faculty. • Required meetings with advisory boards and outside partners. • A perception that CTE programs are “too costly.”

21. CTE Faculty Leadership is Vital! ASCCC Resolution from Fall 1994: 21.06 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FACULTY REPRESENTATION Resolved that the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges reaffirm its position that all advisory, steering and organizational committees involving vocational education have adequate faculty representation appointed by the appropriate state or local senate.
