  1. Christ Teaches Us Compassion “Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I am willing; be cleansed’” (Mark 1:41).

  2. Compassion • “A feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by suffering or misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the pain or remove its cause.” • Regardless of whether they “deserve” it or not • Jesus didn’t express compassion because of the goodness of the man, but because of His goodness. • Old song – “Walk a mile in my shoes…before you abuse, criticize and accuse…” • It can be a cold, callous world. Our job…

  3. Jesus Could: • View the total “life picture” – Luke 7:13 • See the reality of a situation – Matt. 9:6. People understand the physical. • Compassion, even in deep sorrow – Matt. 14:12ff. • Appreciate the loyalty of people – Matt. 15:32 • Moved by the longings of sufferers – Matt. 20:34

  4. Jesus Could: • Be receptive to what we see – Luke 10:30-37 (esp. v. 33) • Express sincere feelings w/o shame – Luke 15:20; John 11:35

  5. We Need To: • Realize the enormity of our debt – Matt. 18:21-35 • Col. 3:12 – “bowels of mercies”. Ever felt so deeply the distress of others that your stomach ached? • Compassion – strong feelings, deeply felt, tenderly expressed.
