The festive air is joyful as Diwali preparations are filled with fun and frolic. It is quite exciting to meet people – old and new, and witness an abundance of happiness among one and all. But the good wishes of Diwali do not reach underprivileged children in India. You might also like Precaution is Better Than Cure - What Initiatives Can be Taken to Avoid Malnutrition? Child labour is still practised across the country. Between the ages of 5 and 14, there are 12.6 million child labourers in India, according to the National Census of 2001. Multiple deep-rooted factors have led to this issue, particularly poverty in India which pushes families to put their children to work to help feed the many mouths at home. It occurs as a result of numerous interrelated problems, such as a lack of food security and viable livelihoods, no access to education etc. Child labour is a complex problem that seems to spread across society where children can be seen working in unsafe environments like mines, agricultural fields where they use chemicals and pesticides, or manufacturing units where they use dangerous machinery. Several children also work as domestic help or at restaurants, roadside stalls, and even railway stations and bus stands. They work long hours for meagre wages without any support or safety measures in place. Each year, several children succumb to preventable diseases in India. With lack of basic amenities, first aid and immediate help, people have nowhere to go. In the current ecosystem, it is very critical to address to the issue. It is time to stop child labour in India as it is the birthright of every child, irrespective of their socioeconomic background to have access to basic resources like education, shelter, healthcare, safety and protection, nutrition etc. Numerous laws prohibit child labour and frequent raids are carried out to rescue children but there is still a long way to go before families understand the value of enrolling children in schools and ensuring they spend their days among their peers where they receive proper resources for wholesome development. Children’s Day with CRY With the collective effort of schools, village leaders, policymakers, parents, and other integral stakeholders, this illegal practice can be addressed and eventually improved. This Diwali, let’s take the resolve to give a brighter and more promising future to India’s children. Donate money online to CRY, the top NGO in India, to help make a difference!
