  1. Earthquakes By Jye Francis

  2. The Earths Layers The Earth consists of 4 layers, which believe it or not have more than anything else to do with earthquakes. The layers (going in order outwards) are “The Inner Core”, “The Outer Core”, “The Mantle” & “The Crust”.

  3. What Directly Causes Earthquakes? • So what does the earth’s layers have to do with the cause of earthquakes. The crust is made of colossal patches of material called plate tectonics. And since they are less than centimetres away from each other, you can see why every now and then they rub against each-other. Which because these plates are so big (I'm talking as big as countries) causes earthquakes. Fact: plate tectonics move about as fast as your fingernails grow. :D

  4. Earthquake Triggered Events • Earthquakes can cause great amounts of damage as they are, but they can often not be the end of the reign of wreckage. They can cause other natural disaster such as volcano eruptions, landslides and even tsunamis.

  5. The Newcastle Earthquake • The most notable local major earthquake ever recorded is without a doubt “The Newcastle Earthquake”. In 1989, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake caused high levels of damage and destruction throughout all of Newcastle. 13 people were accounted for as deceased as of the date of the earthquake. 9 of which unsurprisingly occurred at the Workers Club where the epicentre (main area of damage) was. 3 of which occurred tragically on Beaumont Street, Hamilton. And 1 woman in Broadmeadow died from an earthquake-induced shock. 160 people were hospitalised, approximately 50,000 buildings were damaged (80% of which were homes) and 300 were completely demolished .

  6. Real Life Earthquake Experience • Considering “The Newcastle Earthquake” is such a wide topic to discuss. I thought I’d interview someone who experienced the event in person. My Mum! • Me: Where were you when the earthquake struck? • Mum: I had just woken up and I was in my kitchen getting breakfast • Me: How did it start and what was it like? • Mum: First there was a really loud rumbling sound, then the whole house started to vibrate violently and the floor waved up and down like a jumping castle as objects flew off shelves-smashing on the floor. • Me: Who else was in your house at the time • Mum: It was just me and my nan as my brother and mother were away on holidays, and funnily enough my nan was on the toilet at the time. • Me: What sort of damage was sustained in your area • Mum: Our house was severely damaged, there was crack in almost every wall, and many local landmarks had to be demolished in the coming months. Including The Junction Public School which was then known as The Junction Demonstration School, as well as a multi-storey hotel, where the east-point shopping centre now stands.
