Overview of the Hispanic World • The Spanish language originated in Spain. • It is spoken by many countries worldwide. • The countries are: 1)Spain, 2)Mexico, 3)Guatemala, 4)Honduras, 5)El Salvador, 6)Nicaragua, 7)Costa Rica, 8)Panama, 9)Dominican Republic, 10)Cuba, 11)Colombia, 12)Venezuela, 13)Peru, 14)Ecuador, 15)Bolivia, 16)Uruguay, 17)Paraguay, 18)Chile, and 19)Argentina and 20) Equatorial Guinea (Africa).

  3. Location of countries • Spain (Europe) • Mexico (North America) 3-8. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama (Central America)

  4. Caribbean Sea 9-10. Dominican Republic and Cuba *Puerto Rico is a commonwealth state of the U.S. (It is not a Hispanic country) Spanish is the most spoken language

  5. South America 11-19. Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina.

Spanish in your world • The Spanish language is all around you. • Many of the words you use today come from the Spanish language. • If you turn on the T.V., you will come across Spanish channels, Hispanic entertainers, athletes, etc. • If you shop in a supermarket, you will find typical Hispanic foods. • If you eat out, you may visit a Mexican restaurant. • If you turn on the radio, you may hear Spanish radio stations. • Many places in the United States have Hispanic names. • More importantly, the Spanish language may help you communicate with others in the career of your choice.
