  1. Public Health Nursing Voices from the field

  2. Voices from the field Current Challenges

  3. Voices from the field • “The decrease in funding and number of public health positions at the state and local levels, along with the downgrading of educational qualifications for nursing positions is of grave concern.” • “Public health in our state has been decentralized and deconstructed. The uneven preparation of public health nurses has limited their effectiveness, making them easy targets for budget cuts.” Current Challenges

  4. Voices from the field Future Opportunities

  5. Voices from the field • “Public health nurses are well-positioned to lead system transformation. Well-prepared public health nurses have the expertise to engage community partners in community health assessment and improvement planning.” • “We need a better understanding and communication of the opportunities for evidence-based public health practice supported through the ACA.” Future Opportunities

  6. Voices from the field Clearly articulate a shared vision for the role and value of public health nursing

  7. Voices from the field • “There are many opportunities to redefine Public Health Nursing while Public Health goes through this makeover. Nurses bring critical thinking, nursing theory, and evidence-based practice to the table along with an understanding of the core public health functions and how to implement them.” Clearly articulate a shared vision for the role and value of public health nursing

  8. Voices from the field Develop and implement a clear, consistent communication Strategy for PHN

  9. Voices from the field • “We need to develop and promote the business case for public health nursing, to identify the value added contribution of public health nursing.” • “There is a great need for a clear, consistent communication strategy for public health nursing that communicates the role and value to multiple audiences, including stakeholders.” Develop and implement a clear, consistent communication strategy for PHN

  10. Voices from the field Develop and test new models for PHN practice

  11. Voices from the field • “I see the future of public health nursing as using new models in the community to collaborate with physicians, clinics, hospitals, and businesses to promote health, educate the population on health and wellness, to increase vaccination rates, and to address and prevent chronic disease.” • “We need to test out roles and models for public health nursing. PHNs need to be involved in developing new models of care, new ways to do prevention at the population level.” Develop and test new models for PHN practice

  12. Voices from the field Develop and disseminate new educational models

  13. Voices from the field • “We need to better address the needs for transition to practice at all levels. This includes new models for simulation, continuing education, residency, and practicum. Need models to support new grads as well as those transitioning from other roles in nursing” • “Better dissemination of models for academic-practice linkages and dedicated resources to support linkage efforts are critical.” Develop and disseminate new educational models

  14. Voices from the field Forge new strategic partnerships

  15. Voices from the field • “PHNs must ben engaged with the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action—PHNs should grab on and move along with it.” • “As a profession, we must strengthen existing partnerships and explore new opportunities to join forces with local, state and national partners to help them achieve their public health objectives. PHNs have become a ‘forgotten army’ that can be widely mobilized.” Forge new strategic partnerships

  16. Voices from the field Expand leadership development opportunities

  17. Voices from the field • “Communities benefit when public health nurses bring their broad perspectives and knowledge of the community to engage partners in community health assessment and improvement. PHNs need leadership skill development to support these roles.” • “Leading change in our health care system—or at least finding a place at the table! Elbow our way to the forefront of health reform.” Expand leadership development opportunities

  18. Voices from the field Expand the evidence base for PHN practice

  19. Voices from the field • “We need more evidence and documentation of effective models to gain attention of policymakers, similar to the Nurse-Family Partnership model.” • “Public health nursing needs funding for small and local pilot programs that can be tested and ‘ramped up.’ Pilot these in a variety of settings, including urban and rural. Measure the outcomes, evaluate, and disseminate.” Expand the evidence base for PHN practice
