Edward Burra 1905-1976 SILVER DOLLAR BAR 1955 Burra’s extraordinary graphic style was achieved by painting in watercolour over an initial drawing, and gives an almost cartoon-like feel to the bar he had first visited in 1937. The muscular barman turns to greet us with an almost threatening gaze – the effect gives us the sense of intruding into this louche world. The other side of the bar is depicted parallel to the picture plane, almost like a cinema screen.
