  2. Inception of the JHS Health Sciences Academy(HSA) began in the late fall of 2005. One of several small learning communities at JHS, the HSA is for students interested in a field such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, radiologic technology, rehabilitative therapies, and nursing.

  3. JHS Health Sciences Academy Reviewed for National Recognition by the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) and received the status of “Certified” September 2009

  4. Students participating in the HSA will be able to:

  5. Make health career decisions suited to their individual needs, aptitudes, abilities, and career objectives

  6. Gain real-life experiences through participation in off-campus student medical internships and shadowing

  7. Develop a foundation that supports successful pursuit of post-secondary education and/or entry-level employment in a globally competitive world

  8. Establish healthy lifestyle behaviors

  9. Master essential skills through a rigorous and challenging curriculum.

  13. HEALTH SCIENCE COURSES AVAILABLE • Biomedical Technology – This survey course challenges students to investigate current and 21st century medical and health care practices using computerized databases, the Internet, media, and visiting health team professionals.

  14. Health Science I – This course focuses on human anatomy, physiology and human body diseases and disorders, and biomedical therapies. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course. • Health Science II – This course is designed to help students expand their understanding of financing and trends of health care agencies, fundamentals of wellness, legal and ethical issues, concepts of teamwork, and effective communication. Students will learn health care skills, including current CPR and first aid training. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include shadowing, internship, and service learning.

  15. Nursing Fundamentals: This two-block course is designed for students interested in medical careers where personal care and basic nursing skills are used. This course is an enhanced adaptation of the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) Nurse Aide I (NA) curriculum and helps prepare students for the National Nurse Aide Assessment (NNAAP). Students who pass the NNAAP become listed on the NC NAI Registry. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include a 50 hours of a required clinical internship in a long-term care agency.

  16. CTE Internship This culminating course is for seniors who are career-focused in a health or medical career. Students work under the guidance of a teacher-facilitator in collaboration with community members, business representatives, and other school-based personnel. *100 internship based hours required.

  17. WHAT ABOUT BECOMING A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN? This rigorous course is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment as a pharmacy technician. Included in the course is 15 hours of clinical experience. Prior to clinical placement, a drug screening, criminal background check, and up-to-date shot record (at the student’s expense) are required.  Upon completion of the course, students will take the exam required by the State of North Carolina for certification as a pharmacy technician.
