Degree recognition within the ERASMUS MUNDUS Consortium and the search for a global partnership within the field of Global Studies Main Points to address: • Advantages of a double degree within the framework of Global Studies as a new and interdisciplinary field of study • Integration of the study program within the framework of a double degree Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell

Why we prefer for the time being a double degree • Global Studies as a new field of study • Canon of elements not yet fully established, but more than 140 universities worldwide offering study programs and research centres in that field • Most advanced: US and Asia, but Europe with EMGS for the first time in a leading position • European consortium with its extra-European partners serves as point of departure for global consortium (first meeting February, 2007 UCSB) • Double degree allows better cooperation with extra-European universities Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell

Why we prefer for the time being a double degree II • Global Studies as an interdisciplinary field of study • Organization of study programs by interdisciplinary centres (Leipzig CAS, Wroclaw Willy Brandt Center; Vienna two Departments of History with 6 Departments of Area Studies; London all areas within one Departments, but cooperation with SOAS and sociology/ political sciences at LSE • As a consequence, at each place we practice de facto a joint degree within the single university and a double degree between two of those constellations - management is difficult enough Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell

Why we prefer for the time being a double degree III • Bologna process (introduction of BA, MA, PhD programs) started differently in the member states (administration on the universitie's and the state's level not well prepared: EMGS as forerunner with regard to the introduction of new degrees, diploma supplement etc.) • Specific problem: differences between M Sc. at LSE, MA in Germany and Austria and MA in Poland - joint effort to standardised teaching units/ modules (10 CP each) within the European consortium and with extra-European partners. Double degree gives the necessary flexibility. • All partner universities rich in tradition and prestige, but international cooperation between them dates only back to early 2000s - the EMGS Master creates mutual understanding and willingness to further deepening the integration of institutional cooperation Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell

How we integrate our study program within the framework of a double degree • joint definition of teaching units and permanent discussion of similarity and complementarity • joint selection procedure • joint summer school as part of study program at all places • joint workshops held to develop common teaching materials • joint seminars via Internet with extra-European partners • joint agreements with extra-European partners about students mobility • joint preparation of global consortiums activities Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell

Conclusion Double degree allows better cooperation with extra-European universities within a new field of study Possibility to practice de facto a joint degree within a single university and a double degree between two universities Double degree gives necessary flexibility in not yet standardized study programs Integration of study program within the framework of a double degree needs a lot joint activities within a Consortium Consortium: EMGS Speaker:Matthias Middell
