  7. preparing students for 21st century careers & citizenship Let’s explore what the shift looks like in terms of our practicein schools PK-12.

  8. past… and… present…Students • Answered questions • Memorized • Listened & recited • Worked individually • Followed teachers’ lead • Maintained consistency Tony Wagner, 2008 • Ask good questions • Think critically, problem solve, access & analyze • Discuss, engage others • Work in a team, collaborate • Lead, take initiative • Act on curiosity & imagination

  10. Meet Phillip C. Schlechty • “When students are engaged, they are related to the tasks they are involved with in a different way than when they are strategically or ritually compliant.”

  11. Schlechty on commitment to task “Among other things, the relationship between these students and their work is generally unconditional. They are committed to the task, and the commitment is not contingent on the presence of rewards that are extrinsic to the work or the threat of punishment or negative sanctions.”

  12. A bold idea…The focus on engaging students overrides the focus on test scores. Framework advocated: -Well articulated curriculum standards -Schools as a platform for learning -Teachers as leaders & designers of engaging, meaningful work -Students become responsible for their learning

  13. Schlechty says… “Students should be viewed as customers for the work designed by teachers.” What do you find appealing about this idea? What makes this idea challenging?
