  1. Roll Bender By Eric Bornemann ELM 4701 November 2008

  2. Background Information • Roll benders/(ring rolls) are widely used in the metal fabrication industry • CNC rollers are ideal for repeat jobs and or parts • Typical uses include hand rails, motorcycle frames, radii gussets

  3. Problem Statement Design and fabricate a CNC Roll Bender

  4. Existing Example Top roll Drive rolls

  5. Design Requirements • Minimum Capacity (steel) -Angle 2 x2 x ¼” -Square 1 ¼” -Square tube 2 x 2 x 1/8” -Schedule 40 pipe 2” -Round 1 ¼” -Channel 2 ½” • User Interface • -Top roll position display • -Ability to store and recall common positions • -Manual controls for top and drive rolls

  6. Bending Method Concept Selection Single Pinch Triple Pinch Part Stationary Drive Rolls Drive Rolls Pinch

  7. Control Method Concept selection • Method One • User selects die package • User inputs material length • User inputs required radius • User presses go • Top roll indexes appropriately • Drive rolls feed part through • Top roll returns to top position • Method Two • User sets top roll to desired position • Saves location • Recalls program when desired • Insert part and press SET • Top roll indexes appropriately • Manually feed part through • Press RESET • Top roll returns to top position

  8. User Interface Viewer Screen Keypad Top Roll Drive Rolls 7 Seg. Set Reset On Off E-Stop

  9. Controller Concept Selection Requirements -Flash memory -Compatibility with user interfaces -Ease of mounting -Ease of programming • PLC • -Meets requirements • -More practical HMI options • directly compatible with PLC
