  1. Stanhope does not seem to deserve the respect Osborne gives him? By Jake, John and Nicki.

  2. FOR ACT 1 Bottom of page 4 , “ he’s a long way the best company commander we’ve got” Stanhope has been on the frontline for 3 years in total, he works very hard and is very organised and is seen as a hero to many of his inferiors, he has been promoted to company commander from 2nd lieutenant. Stanhope is always busy and very rarely gets a good nights kip.

  3. FOR Act 2 Stanhope asks for more wire to be put around the Company trench to protect them, and asks for more holes to be blown in the boche wire.(41) Argues against the raid as he cares for his company and sees it as suicide. Act 3 He cares for Raleigh when wounded, ordering for Raleigh to be brought down on a stretcher even in the extreme circumstances of the German attack.

  4. AGAINST • Stanhope is often doped on whiskey, he needs the whiskey to boost his confidence and enable him to fight bravely on the frontline. • Stanhope is often short tempered with his inferiors mainly mason the cook and servant which is shown at the bottom of page 19 when the pepper was missing from the evening supper • Stanhope takes advantage of his position as commander by instructing Osborne to censor all of Raleigh’s letters and by doing so he’s ignoring advice given by the forever wise “uncle” (Osborne). Bottom of page 29

  5. AGAINST • Stanhope is also nasty to Hibbert by holding the gun to his head because Hibbert is scared of going up to the front line. • He draws Trotter being blown to bits on Trotters home made chart and colours in the circles to spoil it. This is showing he has no respect for peoples feelings and thoughts.

  6. CONCLUSION • Even though Stanhope is often drunk during fighting on the frontline, when he first started in the army it’s likely that he did not use drink for confidence. • Stanhope also deserves the respect he gets from uncle because he has been out there for a number of years, and as he states on page 27 there are no men there left, that began there when Stanhope did. • Stanhope also deserves the respect he gets because he has fought to his best ability the whole time he has been out there he personally puts the whole thing down to luck and believes it wont be long before he’s leaving as he says on the bottom 2 7 ; “ It may not be too long now. I’ve had my share of luck – more than my share ”

  7. CONCLUSION • Stanhope deserves a lot of respect because despite Osborne's Death he stays strong. But he also becomes angry with Raleigh for sitting on Osbournes bed and thinking that the company officers are celebrating instead of mourning. • Osbourne always knew that Stanhope was always going to do the right thing whatever the situation often shows remorse for his extreme reactions.
