Gas boiler with CO2 capture to Urea production Bellingham – Gas power plant with CO2 capture for food grade. 1991-2005 Sumitomo Chemicals Plant Fluor Econamine FG CO2 scrubber system, Flue gases from gas, coal/oil boilers. 150-165 t/d food-grade CO2. Operating since 1994. 283 t/d, Japan, 2005. KS-1 amin, MHI. Natural-gas, and oil-fired boiler To dry ice, beverages, and welding. Shady Point – Subbituminous coal. ABB Lummus system with MEA -amin. 200 ton CO2/day. Operation since 1991.

  3. Ammonia plant, Yara Porsgrunn, Norway • Steam methane reforming process. (CH4 -> H2 and CO2) • ~0,8 Mt CO2/y captured from the process. • Liquified, shipped and sold to food grade ++ • Parts of captured CO2 is emitted. • Worldwide ammonia production, ~130 MtCO2 captured.

  4. CO2 pipelines in North America More than 30 years of experince with CO2 transport (first 1972). 3 100 km CO2 piping, total capasity 44 Mt CO2/y. ~80 CO2 to EOR projects today, ~ 30 Mt CO2/y injected.

  5. Lubbock, Texas, 1982 ~0,4 Mt CO2, post combustion. CO2 to EOR

  6. North Dakota coal gasification plant - The Great Plains Synfuels Plant • The Synfuels plant began operating in 1984. • Produces more than 54 billion scf of natural gas. • CO2 capture 3,3 MtCO2/y • Cold methanol, physical solvent process CO2 piped 325 km to Weyburn, Canada. Since 2000. 18. Conclutions Conclutions • The technology has been used for decades for industrial processes. • Compared to other technical challenges the industry has solved; uppscaling of CCS plants is no large technical challenge. • Main challenge is political, not technical. • Need political framework and regulations for full scale CCS, both for new plants, and for existing large emitters. • Need to speed up to built many full scale plants now.
