Minnesota Population Growth • Minnesota added 348,446 people or 7.8% from 2000 to 2010 • Minnesota’s 2010 population is 5,303,925 • Minnesota and South Dakota (7.9%) led the frost belt in percent population growth • Minnesota ranked 26th in percent change and 21st in number change • Texas added 4.3 million and Nevada 35.1% to lead the nation

  6. Substantial Differences Exist In 2009 Population Of Minnesota Congressional Districts State Demographer estimated equal population in 2009 was 662,600. Actual 2010 result is 662,991

The Legislature Will Redraw Both Congressional & Legislative Districts • Census Bureau releases total population of states by December 31, 2010 • Total population determines the number of congressional seats for each state • By March 2011 (probably late February), the state legislatures will receive detailed counts of population for redistricting (PL 94-171 data) • The Minnesota legislature will redraw both Congressional and Legislative districts. This will result in a bill which will go to the Governor—Deadline 2/21/12 or 25 weeks before the primary • Local governments with proportional representation must then redraw their districts
