Senate Bill 1 Requirements THE STANDARDS: • Are aligned with college and workforce expectations; • Are clear, understandable and consistent; • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; • Consider international benchmarks and • Are evidence-based.
The Key Design • College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards • Overarching standards for each strand that are further defined by grade-specific standards • Grade-Level Standards in English Language Arts • K-8, grade-by-grade • 9-10 and 11-12 grade bands for high school • Four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language • Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Standards are embedded at grades K-5 • Content-specific literacy standards are provided for grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12

KDE Support for Districts • District selects teacher representatives to be trained as Content Teacher Leaders. • Four principals from the district attend support meetings through KVEC. • Instructional Supervisors attend monthly meetings through the Instructional Support Leadership Network. • Content Area Specialist provide trainings and support at the request of the district.

Plan and Development • K-8 teachers begindeconstructing process. May, 2010 • K-5 teachers continue deconstructing process. May-July, 2010 • Survey staff on assessment practices November, 2010 NEXT STEPS • 6th –8th grade teachers continue deconstructing process within geographical areas. March – May, 2011 • 9th -12th grade teachers meet by areas and content to devise a plan for sharing with all teachers. March – May, 2011
Review and Revise • K-5 teachers review and recommend revisions. (Round 2) August, 2010 • Meet with Content Teacher Leaders and Administrators to review the process and discuss next steps.
