3. Shadow Copies of Shared Folders • Copies of files on a server volume in multiple versions from specific points in time • Users can access the shadow copies to restore earlier versions • Designed to prevent administrators from having to load backup media to restore individual files for users • A file-based fault tolerance mechanism that does not provide protection against disk failures

4. Volume Shadow Copies Service (VSS) • Shadow Copies of Shared Folders functionality is enabled at the volume level • It will be enabled or disabled for all shared folders on the C:\ drive, the D:\ drive, etc • Shadow copies are read-only; you cannot modify the contents of a shadow copy • Minimum of 300MB to 3GB (Or 10% of the source volume) • If you want to move Shadow copies to another drive, you have to delete all of the old copies

5. Configuring shadow copies • Right click on the volume and choose configure shadow copies • You can schedule how often and when you want to create a snapshot

6. Disk Quotas • Quotas are based on the notion of file ownership • The quota system tracks all of the files owned by each user and adds their sizes.

7. File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) • Provides tools that enable file server administrators to monitor and regulate their server storage • Establish disk quotas • Create file screens • Create templates • Automatically send e-mail messages to users and/or administrators when quotas are exceeded or nearly exceeded • Generate reports providing details of users’ storage activities

8. Hard and Soft Quota • Hard quota • Prohibits users from consuming any disk space beyond the allotted amount • Soft quota • Allows the user storage space beyond the allotted amount and just sends an e-mail notification to the user and/or administrator • Administrators can also specify the thresholds • Dictate the percentage of available disk space at which the system should send notifications • Configure the server to generate event log entries • Reports in response to quota thresholds

9. Quota Templates • A collection of settings that defines a number of configuration items for disk quotas

10. Generating Storage Reports • File Server Resource Manager is capable of generating a variety of reports • Duplicate files • File screening audit • Files by file group • Files by owner • Large files • Least/Most Recently Accessed file • Quota usage

11. Backing Up Windows Server 2008 • To back up Active Directory, you must install • Windows Server Backup feature from the Server Manager console. • PowerShell, if you want to do via command line • Windows Server Backup supports • the use of CD and DVD drives as backup destinations • Does not support magnetic tapes as backup media or dynamic volumes

12. Backing Up Windows Server 2008 • Windows Server 2008 supports two types of backup: • Manual backup • Scheduled backup • Will reformat the target drive • Using Server Backup or the Wbadmin.exe • Must be a member of the Administrators group or the Backup Operators group

13. Restoring from Backups • Restores of Windows Server 2008 can be performed using • The Windows Server Backup MMC snap-in • The wbadmincommand-line utility • Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) • A special boot mode that provides a centralized platform for operating system recovery • Bare-metal restore allows you to restore operating system and data files onto a server that does not have a pre-existing operating system
