  1. ALARA Procedure EN Department

  2. About me … Previous : EN-RSO • Now : • Project • Program • Portfolio • Management

  3. Background 2006 CERN’s formalized approach to ALARA introduced for jobs in SPS and CNGS (at that time called “INB”-installations) 2009 ALARA Introduced to all CERN radiation areas 2012 ALARA review working group report approved 2013-2014 Experience gained during the LS1 Goal : to keep dose to persons as low as possible by optimizing work coordination, work procedures, handling tools, and even the design of entire facilities.

  4. Eras in ALARA work LS1 ? Maturity ENTM dry runs ARWG report EN safety office Sc. Sec ALARA ALARA committee INB work 2006 2007 2010 2011 2014

  5. Objectives of this talk Problem statement What is still missing today in the ALARA work today ? Rationale What can we do to improve ? Roadmap What were the new trends during LS1 ? How can use this experience ?

  6. Key Questions What ? So what ? Now what ?

  7. Previous Practice All the work that needs to be done ALARA Level III Planned Dose Measured Dose Time ALARA committee approval

  8. Memorable quotes “You get all the attention when the intervention needs approval, but there is much less when you are executing the work” “I can’t speak for the organization but that never happens in my department” “It is easy to make a commitment, it is much harder when you have to fulfill it” “To whom should I send my weekly dose reports ?” “There are different perceptions as to whether an intervention is in good order” “We have seen this happen before” “When approving interventions, power should not equal approval because this kills good safety practice”

  9. #Trend 1 Shift to a phased approach Intervention roadmap As the basis for approval of the intervention Intervention plan Work out the details with the teams Change requests, meeting minutes, status reports What is going on ? Where is help needed ? Lessons learned What are the key take aways ? How can we do better next time ? Interventions > 1 week

  11. #Trend 2 Monitoring & control Visibility Approval Phase gates Time

  12. PS-Ventilation project Alessandro Saputiet al., 7/3/14 Acknowledgements : P. Carbonnezet al. – DGS/RP

  13. #Trend 3 Pro-active ALARA approach Accelerators The safest mode for an accelerator is probably when it is shut down but that is not what they are made for. They are made to operate at their nominal beam intensities and nominal energies and that involves (radiation) risks. Take a small dose now to avoid taking a big dose later !

  14. TDC2-TCC2 project A. Gonzalez Puertas et al., 20/5/14 SPS Cables - Shielding Wall Helmut Vincke et al., EDMS 1329637

  15. #Trend 4 Learn & improve Working methods Be critical, revise and update your working methods regularly Working documents Make sure your working documents & drawings are up to date – always ! Determine the need for further improvement/training What would be the ideal situation ? How do we get there ?

  16. ISOLDE electrode removal E Barberoet al., 20/5/14 ISOLDE electrode gripper tool A-P Bernardes et al., EDMS 993790

  17. Summary Change Requests Intervention Roadmap Meeting Minutes Intervention Planning Lessons Learned Dashboards Status Reports

  18. Do you follow the trends ? You are invited to contribute to the creation of the new EN-ALARA rules ! • Do • Break your work up in phases • Insert phase gates & check with the safety office • Take a pro-active approach and “invest” in the future • Don’t • Use a single big lump of work • Go ahead and communicate when the problems are there • Get the job done and leave the big problems for later

  19. Golden ALARA rules • See the whole • Empower your team • Amplify the learning • Build integrity in
