  1. Socratic Seminars An Introduction

  2. Purpose • achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text.

  3. Process • participants systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content • articulate different points-of-view

  4. Result • constructing meaning through • disciplined analysis • interpretation • listening • participation

  5. Burden of Responsibility The participants carry the burden of responsibility for the quality of the discussion.

  6. Good Discussion Good discussions occur when participants • study the text closely in advance • listen attentively • share their ideas and questions in response to the ideas and questions of others • and search for evidence in the text to support their ideas

  7. Not • about right answers • a debate

  8. Is • a time to think out loud • a place to exchange ideas openly • an opportunity to examine ideas in a rigorous, thoughtful manner

  9. Preparation • In addition to reading The Kite Runner, students will be asked to • read and annotate a short informational text for each Socratic Seminar

  10. Preparation • Students will then • connect the informational text to events in The Kite Runner • pose their own questions for the Socratic Seminar using Bloom’s Taxonomy • fuse the informational text with The Kite Runner.

  11. Preparation • Complete Questions for Socratic Seminar and bring to class on the day of the Socratic Seminar. • You will not be allowed to participate in the Socratic Seminar without completing Questions for Socratic Seminar

  12. During • I will be observing and recording.

  13. Afterward • I will collect your questions, answers and your annotated article as a part of the evaluation.

  14. Standards • Socratic Seminars will be used to meet academic standards for: • Analyze themes/central ideas/events and their development throughout the text (F/IT) • Cite strong textual evidence to support analysis of text (F/IT) • Determine meanings of words/phrases in a text (e.g. figurative language, connotation, word choice, tone) (IT)

  15. Dates • Socratic Seminars will be held: • Wednesday, 10/15 (Formative) • Friday, 10/24 (Formative) • Friday, 10/31 (Summative)
