  5. g IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, and over 2.9 million people have taken the test in the last year. IELTS is available in over 135 countries, and its results are accepted by over 10,000 organizations and institutions worldwide. That’s why IELTS is the most popular high-stakes test in the world, with scores accepted for admission to education, employment, and migration. British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English Language Assessment jointly own IELTS. IELTS is a test that assesses all four language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) and is accessible in two versions: Academic and General.

The listening and speaking tests are the same on each. However, the reading and writing tests are different. IELTS Academic The IELTS Academic test is designed for students who want to pursue higher education in an English-speaking environment. It contains questions and vocabulary that are used in the academic environment. All universities in the United Kingdom and Australia and many schools in the United States, New Zealand, and Canada accept IELTS Academic scores. This exam is also open to people who want to be professionally registered.

It’s also appropriate for people who want to study at a lower level than a bachelor’s degree (e.g., in high school). The test covers common English language abilities that can be applied in social and professional environments. It is also a requirement for migration to the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada to take the IELTS General Training exam.   11. g Both versions of IELTS tests include four sections. The listening, reading and writing components take two hours and 45 minutes to complete on the same day with no breaks. On the other hand, The speaking section is performed one week earlier or after the other three tests because it is done one-on-one with a certified proctor. You must complete numerous tasks for each section, such as multiple-choice, yes or false, diagram labelling, brief responses, matching, and so on.

  12. Listening The test taker can listen to four recordings of native English speakers in the listening section. This section assesses the ability of the test taker to comprehend primary ideas and factual information, speakers’ viewpoints and attitudes, and the purpose of messages. It also assesses one’s ability to track the evolution of ideas. After that, you must answer questions about the audios. The four recordings are as follows: • A conversation between 2 people in a normal social context. • A monolog set in a common social situation. • In an educational or training environment, a conversation between four persons, and • A monolog on a topic of academics. Reading The reading section consists of 40 questions assessing various reading skills, including gist, main idea, detailed reading, skimming, analyzing arguments, and recognizing writers’ perspectives and attitudes. The IELTS Academic test includes three long texts from books, periodicals, journals, and newspapers. These are not field-specific and are suitable for general academic environments. The IELTS General Training test is divided into three sections: the first has two to three short texts (or several even shorter texts), the second contains two texts, and the third contains one large text. These resources include books, periodicals, newspapers, advertisements, company handbooks and guidelines. They are things that you will almost certainly come across in ordinary English-speaking environments. Exam pattern of Reading Section • Duration: 60 minutes • No. of questions: 40 • Question type(s): Short answer, Matching headings, Multiple choice, Sentence completion, Summary completion, Flow-chart completion, Diagram labeling, Identifying writer’s views/claims, and more.

Answers are supposed to be written formally because it is developed for an academic setting. It requires test takers to write an essay response to a perspective, argument, or problem and to describe or interpret facts presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram in their own words. On the other hand, the writing section of the IELTS General Training test covers topics of general interest, such as everyday situations. Test takers must compose a letter responding to a specific issue and respond in an essay-like manner, comparable to the IELTS Academic exam but more casual or personal. Exam pattern of Writing Section • Duration: 60 minutes • No. of questions: 2 • Question type(s): • Writing Task-1: Write a 150-word essay on a related topic summarizing the information presented in the graphs, tables, or diagrams. This task should take no more than 20 minutes for students to complete. • Writing Task-2:Respond to the given argument, point of view, or problem with a coherent and relevant essay of at least 250 words. Academic and neutral writing style should be used. It is recommended that students spend no more than 40 minutes on this exercise.

  15. Speaking The speaking section covers three parts; the full section takes 11 to 14 minutes. The first part consists of introducing yourself and discussing a variety of familiar topics. The second part consists of a question that you must answer about a specific topic. The third section is a continuation of the second, and it allows you to discuss more abstract ideas related to the initial topic. Every test is recorded, and the speaking part is done with an examiner who asks you questions (i.e., an oral interview). You’ll be judged on your fluency, grammar, and pronunciation, among other things. Part 2: The test takers are given a card with a topic on which they must speak for two minutes. On the same topic, the examiner can ask 1 to 2 follow-up questions. The exam takers are given a minute to prepare once the topic is presented, as well as a piece of paper and a pencil to take notes. Part 3: The examiner and test taker address topics relating to the topic presented in Part-2 in a more abstract and in-depth manner in this section.
