Divergent Boundary

Divergent Boundary . A plate boundary where the plates pull away from each other. As the plates pull away, magma rises to fill the gap. The molten material cools and forms a type of mountain called a mid-ocean ridge . Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

  1. Divergent Boundary A plate boundary where the plates pull away from each other As the plates pull away, magma rises to fill the gap. The molten material cools and forms a type of mountain called a mid-ocean ridge. Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridge

  2. Mid-Atlantic Ridge – world’s longest mountain chain When the sea floor gets larger, this is Called sea-floor spreading

  3. Transform Boundary This boundary is where two plates slide past each other. The two plates grinding past each other, creating seismic waves, resulting in earthquakes! Example: San Andreas Faultline

  4. San Andreas Fault

  5. Convergent Boundaries This boundary occurs when two plates push against one another. What forms depends on the type of crust.

  6. Continental/Continental Collision When two pieces of continental Crust collide, this causes the rock layers to buckle upward, creating FOLDED MOUNTAINS. Example: Himalayan Mountains

  7. Continental/Oceanic Collision - Subduction Zones If a piece of continental crust collides with a piece of oceanic crust, the denser oceanic crust subducts or dives under the continental crust. The oceanic plate melts and creates a volcano! Subduction Zone Animation

  8. Make page ____ look like this:

  9. Create a bubble map about Plate Tectonics and the Three Boundaries. Three Plate Boundaries and the landforms they create What the original Theory was What the Theory Says Plate Tectonics
