  3. Phonemic Awareness • Is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate • the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. • It is a pre-reading activity.

  4. Phonics • This is the ability to understand the relationships • between letters (graphemes) of written language and the • individual sounds (phonemes) of spoken language

  5. Fluency This is the ability to read text accurately, quickly and with expression. This occurs when readers read silently and recognize words automatically.

  6. Vocabulary This means the words students must know to communicate effectively. This includes listening, speaking, readinga and writing vocabulary.
