  7. Main Supervisor Graduate Faculty appointed by University to lead supervision of a research student. The supervisor is appointed by the School of Graduate Studies based on faculty’s recommendation. 3. Supervisory Journey: Who Qualify and the Responsibilities Co-Supervisor Co-Supervisor is an individual appointed by the faculty or University to co-supervise a student’s research. A co-supervisor may be appointed among the experts from within or outside the University. Appointment of co-supervisor should not involved any financial implications.

  8. Kelayakan Penyelia Penyelia utama mestilah Staf Akademik Siswazah dan staf sepenuh masa UTM. Untuk calon ijazah kedoktoran, penyelia utama mestilah sekurang-kurang mempunyai ijazah kedoktoran. Pensyarah yang bukan Staf Akademik Siswazah (yang tidak mempunyai ijazah kedoktoran dan bukan berjawatan Profesor Madya) tidak boleh menjadi penyelia utama dan hanya dibenarkan menjadi penyelia bersama. Penyelia utama mestilah terdiri daripada staf akademik siswazah yang mempunyai pengalaman penyeliaan bersama sekurang- kurangnya dua (2) tahun dan diperakukan oleh Pengajian Siswazah Fakulti serta telah mengikuti kursus penyeliaan yang dianjurkan oleh UTM. Pensyarah kontrak yang berkelayakan boleh dilantik sebagai penyelia utama dengan syarat baki tempoh kontrak melebihi tempoh penyeliaan. Penyelia bersama perlu dilantik apabila penyelia utama adalah pensyarah kontrak. Penyelia Industri mestilah mempunyai ijazah doktoral atau sekurang-kurangnya mempunyai kepakaran dan pengalaman yang meluas dalam bidang dan industri berkenaan. Penyelia tidak boleh mempunyai pertalian persaudaraan yang rapat dengan pelajar. Pertalian persaudaraan yang rapat ditakrifkan dalam Perkara 5.3, Kod Etika Professional dan Akademik, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Role of a Supervisor • You encourage and assist your students to develop standards of achievement that will result in a thesis of merit that is: • a substantial and original contribution to scholarship (PhD); • a substantial work generally based on independent research which shows a sound knowledge of the subject of the research (MPhil)

  11. Taylor and Beasley (2005) in their Handbook for Doctoral Supervisors describe an effective supervisor as someone who enables their candidate to: initiate and plan their research project; acquire the research skills to undertake their project with adequate access to resources; complete their project on time; produce a high-quality thesis; be successful in examination, disseminate their results; and lay the basis for their future career.

  28. 4. Notification of Thesis Submission/Notis Hantar Tesis • WHAT? – Notification for student to submit a thesis for viva-voce. • WHEN? – at least 3 months before submit a thesis. Minimum thesis notification for Master in semester 2 and for PHD in semester 5. • HOW? – Through GSMS System

  29. Conditions to submit intention.. Active students.- Verified by supervisor(s)- Notice valid for one (1) year- The minimum semester for intention (PhD)- semester five (5) [FULL TIME] and semester (7) – PART TIME CV for new external examiner to be uploaded (once only). JKA Faculty will approve the nomination and nominate Chairman and Assistant Chairman (CAN FACULTY NOMINATE NEW EXAMINERS?) Endorsement of examiners (2/2) and Chairman/Assistant Chairman at JAPSU

  30. Who can be examiner?... Must be PhD holders for doctoral examination. For master by research – Assoc Prof (without PhD) may be appointed Industrial Examiners – those with vast experience in the research field – Industrial Doctoral (EngDoc/Ind. Phd Not directly involve in the research: as co-researcher or authoring the papers Not in the close emotional ties Signify the willingness to examine the thesis  Knowledgeable in the area to be examined (!!) The candidate must possess at least equal academic standing as the supervisor

Appointment of examiners • Master by Research • Approved by Deputy Dean (Academic) • Endorsed in JAPSU • Appointment by the faculty • Doctoral Student • Endorsed in the JAPSU • Main and substitute examiners will be verified and endorsed. • Appointment by School of Graduate Studies • Pemeriksa luar diberi tempoh dua (2) minggu dari tarikh penerimaan surat lantikan untuk mengesahkan terima / tolak perlantikan sebagai pemeriksa. • Sekiranya pemeriksa menolak perlantikan, pemeriksa gantian akan dilantik. • Perlantikan pemeriksa dalam tidak boleh ditolak melainkan atas alasan yang sangat kukuh dan diperakukan semula oleh mensyuarat JKPSF. • Pengajian Siswazah Pengajian Siswazah Fakulti perlu menamakan semula pemeriksa sekiranya semua calon yang di perakukan tidak dapat melaksanakan tugas mereka.

  41. Supervisor’s agreement Item 15 (2) of Peraturan Akademik Pengajian Siswazah : A thesis or dissertation submitted for examination must be approved by supervisor IMPORTANT: Supervisor become quality controller…up to PhD/Master level (sample!)

The Role And Responsibilities Of Supervisor Prior to Viva-voce • To ensure the student makes adequate preparation   • Ensure the student is aware the viva date/time etc  • Not to interfere the management of viva-voce by the faculty or School of Graduate Studies. • Not to inform the student the result of thesis examination before viva session.

  44. During the oral examination- Viva Voce • Attend the oral examination session. It is compulsory • Give attention to the result of the examination especially the corrections decided by the examination panel. • Not to interfere during the viva session unless required to do so by the panel of examiner

Physical Attendance.. • Master • The attendance of internal examiner is compulsory • For b1 and above, the external may not required to attend the viva session but is required to prepare detail report with corrections to be addressed • For ‘b2 and below’ – the external is required to attend the viva session • Doctoral • The attendance of internal and external is compulsory. • ‘tele-conference’ can be arranged provided the facilities are available
