  1. How to Get Certified Under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) What is the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)? In 2012, the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order required the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to implement the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). Certain goods must be registered with BIS under this system before they may be produced, imported, or offered for sale in India. Products Covered Under BIS CRS Certain home appliances, IT products, and gadgets are all subject to the BIS CRS. A few typical items are: Mobile phones, tablets, laptops LED lights and LED TVs Power adapters and chargers Microwaves, washing machines, and air conditioners Batteries and power banks Smartwatches and Bluetooth speakers

  2. The list is regularly updated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Documents Needed for Certification as a BIS CRS To apply for the BIS CRS certificate, you will need the following: 1.Business License/Company Registration 2.Manufacturing Unit Details 3.ISO 9001 Certificate of the factory 4.Product Test Report from a BIS-recognized lab 5.Technical Specification Sheet 6.Letter of Authorization (for Indian Representative in case of a foreign manufacturer) 7.Undertaking & Affidavit as per BIS format BIS CRS Testing Requirements The product has to be tested on samples at a BIS-approved lab in India before certification. According to the Indian Standard (IS) that applies to the product type — for example, IS 13252 for IT equipment — the lab conducts testing. The test report is then submitted along with the application for BIS CRS certification.

  3. Step-by-Step Process to Get BIS CRS Certification Step 1: Determine Applicability Verify if the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) applies to your product category. Step 2: Product Testing Send your product sample to a BIS-accredited lab in India and obtain the test report. Step 3: Application Submission Apply online through the BIS CRS portal and upload all required documents and test reports. Step 4: Review & Grant of License BIS will review your application. If everything is in order, the BIS CRS certificate is granted with a unique R-number. Step 5: Marking Requirement Once certified, the product must be labeled with the Standard Mark and the Registration Number as per BIS guidelines. Validity & Renewal The BIS CRS certificate is valid for 2 years (initially). It can be renewed every 2 years, provided there are no changes in product design or manufacturing process.

  4. Non-Compliance Consequences Selling products without BIS CRS certification (if applicable) can result in: Seizure of goods Heavy penalties Business license cancellation Import ban for foreign manufacturers Final Thought Acquiring BIS CRS certification is a sign of quality, safety, and trustworthiness in addition to regulatory compliance. With India’s rising demand for tech and electronics items, having a current BIS CRS certificate helps you establish confidence in the market and offers your business a competitive edge.
