Previous round African participation was very weak and declining 1985 – 1994: 44 countries 1995 – 2004: 41 countries Never conducted a census : 7 countries Current round: 2005 - 2014 Since 2005: so far 18 countries Use of advanced technology: Scanning, satellite images Emphasis is made in the post conflict countries Census progress in Africa Slide 4

ASSD 4 ASSD + 5th in Dakar Advocacy Sharing experiences CRVS Dedicate the Theme for the 2009 African Statistics Day to civil registration and vital statistics systems; All African governments are called upon to take appropriate measures in availing the necessary resources and support to civil registration and vital statistics systems; Explore the possibility of organizing a high-level Ministerial Conference on Improving Civil Registration as near-future as possible to maintain the momentum.
