Target Moderator Sessions Summary

Target Moderator Sessions Summary. Changing of the themes. Last 20-25 years were very heavy on neutronics. SINQ , ESS 1.0, Austron , SNS, J-PARC , Lujan-Mark1,2,3 CSNS , ISIS-TS2 , ESS 2.0. World wide about 6ish Billion USD/Euro/CHF/GBP were invested in neutron scattering.

  1. Target Moderator Sessions Summary

  2. Changing of the themes • Last 20-25 years were very heavy on neutronics. • SINQ, ESS 1.0, Austron, SNS, J-PARC,Lujan-Mark1,2,3CSNS, ISIS-TS2, ESS 2.0 World wide about 6ish Billion USD/Euro/CHF/GBP were invested in neutron scattering. This ICANS was heavy on engineering: “Protecting and increasing the return on the investment.” • Neutronics for the next projects is set: • SNS-TS2, J-PARC-TS2, HBS: High Brightness

  3. Eng. Ex.: Pressure Wave Mitigation Theory (Charlotte Barbier) At the center SNS: VF<0.05% • Peak pressure decrease is a function of: • bubble size • void fraction (total number of bubbles) • At the wall  VF matters the most • 1% VF with 300 mm diam bubble: 25 MPa  0.6 Mpa • 0.05% with 40 mm diam bubbles: 25 Mpa 6 Mpa • Higher pressure wave mitigation when the wave propagates through a liquid-bubble mixture. =30mm At the wall 1D simulation in a cylinder, monodisperse population, no bubble-bubble interaction Okita, K., Takagi, S. and Matsumoto, Y., 2008. Propagation of pressure waves, caused by a thermal shock, in liquid metals containing gas bubbles. Journal of Fluid Science and Technology, 3(1), pp.116-128.

  4. Eng. Ex.: Life time analysis (Justin Mach)

  5. Ops: PSI (Bertrand Blau)

  6. Ops: ISIS methane moderator: (Oleg Kirichek/Gemma Draper)

  7. Ops: Para-H2: (Monika Hartl)

  8. Quo vadis Neutronics Optimization of the high brightness moderators in support of the projects. Where is the undiscovered land? • VCN sources • High power UCN sources • keV sources • Instruments background What is needed to discover the undiscovered land? • Improved variance reductions • Scattering kernels to go beyond the needs of the 1960s. • Improved computer tools
