  1. CMS in operation MoA Final report 2009 and needs 2010-2011 CMS_CB, 11 December, 2009

  2. MoA 2009: CMS members and pledges CMS members assigned to a project: from 1007 to 2575. CMS authors: 1911 Total pledges: 8955 person-months corresponding to ~99,2% of the needs. Excellent result. Many thanks to all.

  3. MoA 2009: projects. All countries in green or dark green: OK. All projects in green or dark green; OK. Some lack of pledges for Computing, Offline and DAQ understood and considered not critical for the experiment. Some of the “over-pledges” will be re-directed to areas needing help (discussions ongoing with the PM and Coordinators). Careful review of the needs of all projects has been put in place. • Color code: Red <25%; Yellow 25%-50%; Very light green 50%-75%; Light green 75%-100%; Dark green >100%

  4. Needs 2010-2011 Detailed discussion among all projects held on November 19. Critical revision of the needs of a few sub-systems based on the 2009 experience and preparation for 2010-11 including the survey of the needs for the upgrade project. • Needs 2010: 8580 person-months including 498 person-months for the upgrade (715 FTE including 41.5 FTE for the upgrade) • To be compared with 9147 and 762 FTE for 2009 without upgrade. • We’ll request the Collaboration to provide in 2010-2011 a similar effort wrt the pledges 2009 (aiming at ~10% contingency)

  5. MoA 2010: shifts. Within the general effort to cover the MoA needs for the operation of CMS the plan for 2010 is to ask all institutions to provide the experiment a fair share of pledges for the shifts in general and central shifts in particular. We have agreed on a certain set of shifts considered crucial for the experiment as a whole and Tiziano is preparing a call for these shifts to plan in advance the whole 2010. Shifts will be organized in blocks and each institution and country of CMS will be required to cover its fair share proportional to the # of authors. The shift column in the MoA overview will be used to monitor the contributions to shifts at the country and institution level.

  6. MoA 2010: shifts. Memo from Tiziano to the CB appended in the agenda Central Shifts : DAQ, Trigger, Detector safety, DQM, Shift leader, computing shift Prompt On-call: DAQ, Trigger, detector safety. DQM, computing, offline supervisor, Beam Condition Monitor, High Level trigger Run field managers (2 at any given time , serving for 4 weeks) This would not be an additional MOA load. Assuming that we start 24/7 operation the last week of January and will continue until end of November each institute will have to contribute 0.73 “7 days/shift” period per signatory. The minimum number of shifts to be contributed by a given shifter will vary depending from the task (e.g. the proposed minimum will be 14 shift for DQM, 21 shifts for shift leader, 21 shift for Trigger, 28 shifts for DAQ and so on).

  7. CMS wide committee • Publication Committee: Chair 3 months; non ex-officio members 1.5 months (16.5 months) • Conference Committee: Chair 3 months; non ex-officio members 1.5 months (9 months) • Statistics Committee: Chair 2 months; members 1 month. (12 months) • Authorship Board: Chair 1.5 months. • Secretaries CB/MB/FB: 1.5 months. (4.5months) • Total service credit for CMS wide committee: 43.5 person-months (3.6FTE)

  8. Conclusion • A final estimate of the needs 2010-2011 is available. Including the upgrade (~41.5FTEs) it amounts to ~715 FTEs. • Guidelines for 2010-2011 • no change in the formal rule: 3 months/signing author as minimal obligation • ask again all institutions to produce their best effort as in 2009 • plan to have a 10% contingency in the pledges • we propose to introduce an obligation also in terms of central shifts. • CMS wide Committees/activities giving right to credit for service activities will account for ~3.6FTE in 2010-11. • Final numbers for 2010-2011 are presented for approval at this CB.
