  1. Lysimeter Study Approach • Simulate landfill disposal of CCA • 6 PVC Columns • 22 feet high, 1-Foot diameter • Natural Precipitation or DI water infiltrates through a cap and creates leachate

  2. Disposal Scenarios • CCA Monofill • Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill

  3. Lysimeters • Lysimeter 1 – Untreated wood • Lysimeter 2 – CCA: 50% old, 50% new • Lysimeter 3 – Typical C&D mix • Lysimeter 4 – C&D w/CCA • Lyimeter 5 – MSW w/untreated wood • Lysimeter 6 – MSW w/CCA

  4. Monitoring • Lysimeters began operation on August 28 (Wood, C&D) and September 27, 2001 (MSW) • Weekly temperature taken inside the lysimeters at 3 different depths (5, 10, 19 feet from the top of waste) • Record volume and characterize gas produced • Test gas with Landtec Gem 500 (methane, CO2)

  5. Leachate Collection • Collect leachate twice monthly and analyze for general water quality parameters and As, Cu, and Cr

  6. Preliminary Results • Weekly Temp monitoring fluctuates with ambient temps • Weekly gas monitoring – methane detected up to 60% in MSW lysimeters • Leachate generated from all lysimeters • Metals found in Lysimeters w/CCA • Lys 2 - 9/28/2001 • Lys 4 - 6/25/2002 • Lys 6 - 7/17/2002

  7. Lysimeter 2 – 100% CCA

  8. Lysimeter 4 – C&D w/ 10% CCA

  9. Lysimeter 6 – MSW w/ 2% CCA

  10. MSW C&D UT Wood CCA Lysimeter Leachate pH

  11. Arsenic

  12. Chromium

  13. Copper

  14. Operation • Lysimeters will continue operation through spring and summer • DI water added as needed • Temp and Gas readings taken weekly • Leachate collection twice monthly and continued analysis for general water quality parameters and As, Cu, Cr
