Where is Yellowknife • Yellowknife is in the Northwest Territories. Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories.
How Yellowknife got its name • The name Yellowknife comes from the copper-wielding Chipewyan tribe which fought the Dene for many years. • They actually used copper knives, that were sort of a yellow color. Now that is cool!
Interesting Facts • Yellowknife did not have organized gold mining until the mid-1930’s. • By 1942 it had a population of 1000 people. • By 1967 Yellowknife was the capital city of the Northwest Territories. • Hunting, trapping, and fishing still dominate the local economy.
