  1. Three Brains Are Better Than One: Honors Liaison/Research Faculty/Honors Student Teamwork Deb Stanford, MSN, RNMona Shattell, PhD, RN

  2. Abstract • Our presentation shares a dynamic combination that we've found to be essential for integrating research into our undergraduate nursing program. • We combine an innovative triad for maximum research and learning effectiveness. The deliberate interactions of our three-brain triad: honors liaison, research faculty and honors students have resulted in significant success. • Facets of this triad will be discussed, exposing the important role each plays in the outcomes of student research and student learning.

  3. School of Nursing Faculty • 66 FT & PT faculty • 31 have doctorates • 35 have master’s degrees as their highest degree

  4. School of Nursing Students • Undergraduate Nursing Students • Application to upper division • Approximately 200 Juniors and Seniors

  5. Honors at UNCG • Honors program growth and expansion to “International” Fall 2006 • Welcome to theAubrey Paul & Georgia Garrison Lloyd INTERNATIONAL HONORS COLLEGE

  6. Fall 2006 UNCG launches Lloyd International Honors College

  7. Purpose of the Honors Program • Enrich students’ education experiences • LIHC identifies honors freshmen to liaison and encourages all students accepted to honors to contact their liaison • Approximately 300 Freshmen & Sophomores • International Honors + Disciplinary Honors = Full University Honors

  8. Types of Honors Courses • Honors seminars • Honors sections of regular courses • Contract courses: students contract with course faculty for honors credit • Independent studies • Senior honors projects

  9. International Honors • Freshman & Sophomore years • Incorporates general education courses • International travel/semester abroad expected • Pre-approved summer abroad programs accepted

  10. Disciplinary Honors • In the student’s discipline/major • Junior & Senior years • Honors contracts with junior clinical courses • Senior honors project: 3 sh. Independent Study (IS) or Undergraduate Research Assistantship (URA)

  11. Honors Liaison • Each academic department at UNCG has a faculty Honor Liaison who is knowledgeable about their own programs as well as the International Honors Program. • Honors students are encouraged to get to know the Liaison in their department, especially by the time they are juniors and fully in their major.

  12. Honors Liaison Assistance: Appointments & Walk-ins • Keep file on all students registered with Honors • Brainstorm with students about areas of interest for junior-level “enrichment activities” -> honors credit for clinical courses • Brainstorm with students about their senior honors project • topic and faculty research advisors

  13. Senior Honors Project • Begin thinking about a topic - Gather your thoughts about what sort of topics would be interesting to you. Talk to fellow students and your professors and to hone your ideas. • Find a faculty director to supervise your project - After you have a sense of what you would like to do, identify a faculty member whom you would like to work with and discuss your topic(s) with that person. If that faculty member agrees to supervise the Senior Honors Project, you can then begin refining your thinking about a more specific research topic.

  14. Faculty Support & Enthusiasm • Honors advisors (liaisons) are aware of faculty research interests, often guide students in finding a faculty research project director • Faculty are ready, willing & able to facilitate undergraduate research projects • Undergraduate Research Assistantship (URA), student stipend of $1,000/semester • Senior Honors Project = URA or Honors Independent Study

  15. Communication • Phone, email or in-person • As fellow faculty, we work well together and never hesitate to suggest students contact the other • We make appointments to bring a student to meet with each other or show-up at each other’s office with a student to discuss potential collaboration

  16. Senior honors project notice of completion http://honorscollege.uncg.edu/forms/ http://honorscollege.uncg.edu/
