  1. Pointers Run PiranhasParent Meeting Sunday, May 17, 2009

  2. Welcome and Introductions • Two swim meetings today. If you plan to swim for the Pheasant Ridge Rapids, the meeting is at 6:00 PM

Team Objectives • Swimmers should : • Have fun and build confidence in their swimming abilities • Develop good sportsmanship skills and feel a part of the community • The team holds various activities, other than meets, throughout the season such as: • Pep rallies • 4th of July Parade • Swim-a-Ton/Charity fundraiser/sleepover at the pool (July 18th) • Awards Banquet • Our season will be successful if your child, regardless of their swimming ability, wants to return next year

Requirements for Swimmers • Must be able to swim one length of the pool (unassisted) by Time Trials on June 13th • Swimmers must compete in either (3) dual meets or (2) dual meets plus time trials to receive a trophy • Swimmer’s age as of June 1, 2009 determines age group for competition throughout summer

Requirements for swimmers • Realistic goals and expectations for swimmers…(and parents) • Child swimming doggy paddle may still be doggy paddling at end of season • Coaches aren’t able to provide specific tailored instruction • Kids learn at different rates and have different needs • We encourage swimming lessons (discount for CA outdoor lessons if on swim team)

  6. Registration Options • Mail to Outdoor Pools Office postmarked by June 13th in order to swim in the first meet on June 20th. Forms available at check-in table • Drop off the completed registration form to the Outdoor Pools Office by 2:00 PM on June 13th to be eligible to compete in first meet on June 20th. • Managers and Coaches are NO LONGER able to collect registration payments for CA.

  7. Practice Schedule Pre-Season • Pre-Season Practice • Limited to 2 lanes (can be crowded, please be patient) • Pool can be cold – be prepared, especially Hobbits Glen • Do not force kids into pool when really cold, rather have them go swim inside in a heated pool, or take a day off and keep on enjoying swimming • 1-2 hot days and pool temperatures will rapidly rise • New Swimmers Monday, June 1st @ Hobbits Glen • 6 & Under 5:00 --5:30 p.m. • 7 – 8 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. • 9 – 10 5:30 -- 6:00 p.m. • 11 & Up 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. • Alternate days RH and HG; EXCEPT June 17th HG 18th HG 19th RH due to first Pep Rally Note: HG closed to public on Wednesdays, siblings cannot swim on these days.

Practice Schedule Regular Season • Begins Monday, June 22th (Pool is closed to public during these sessions, have all lanes to practice) • Morning Practices: MWF @ River Hill, Thursday @ Hobbits Glenn. • 11 & Up 8-8:45 a.m. • 7-10 8:45-9:30 a.m. • 6 & Under 9:30-10 a.m. • Evening Practices • Tuesday @ Clemens Crossing: • 6&U 6:30-7 p.m. • 7-10 7-7:30 p.m. • 11&U 7:30-8 p.m. • Wednesday @ Hobbits Glenn • 6&U 5-5:30 p.m. • 7-10 5:30-6 p.m. • 11&U 6-6:30 p.m.

Meets • Time - 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. • Home meets warm-ups 7 a.m. • Away meets warm-ups 7:30 a.m. Caravan from PRES @ 7 a.m. • Allow time for parking and walking to pool • At home meets, the seating along Great Star Drive reserved for AWAY team • Check-in with Clerk of Course (Pam Ferrari and Carol Wolter) • 6&Under -- parents please pay attention and bring your kids to line-up area on time, backstroke sneaks up quickly (tell Clerk of Course if your child is not going to swim backstroke) ; shepherds have cards • 7 & Up – kids pick up cards from clerk of course

Meets… • CNSL runs meet in the same order each week (will post after time trials) • Parents need to stay out of bullpen/deck area for safety reasons (exception shepherds) • Children placed in heats based on time trials or last week’s meet • Ribbons for heat winners, best times and all children 8 & under get ribbon 1-8 (after 8th all ribbons are 8th place) • Ribbons for 9 and up are 1st- 12th, CNSL provides 1 -8 , piranhas provide 9 -12 so that more children have opportunities to get ribbons • Children can do two races and one relay, 6 & under (free and back), 7 & up coaches will choose the two events. Children/parents may request events, coaches must have information by TUESDAY 10am to be considered for that week

  11. Relays • If you need to leave early and your child cannot participate in a relay then please note this on the meet absence form • Check board behind Clerk of Course to see if your child is in a relay (if so please stay and be ready to help line them up) • Relays are popular, coaches will try to rotate kids so that each child will be in at least 2 relays per season (A relay, generally the 4 fastest freestyle times from last meet) • If you help line the children up remember to keep your hands behind your back because if you touch the child the team will DQ

  12. More on Meets • Need volunteers at both home and away meets (More on volunteering later) • Bring your own chairs, do not take chairs marked for meet officials • At the end of the season there is the All-City meet where all the swim teams compete at one meet • 8 and Under Age Groups will swim on the Friday evening. • Teens will swim Saturday AM • 9-12 will swim Saturday PM

Volunteers • Takes over 40 volunteers to run a successful meet; this is a neighborhood swim league and it takes the whole village to run a meet • We supply volunteers for both home and away meets; training available for timers, scorers and officials. Stroke & Turn judges need to attend one 2 hour session at 7pm on either • Wednesday, June 3 • Thursday, June 4 • Tuesday, June 9 • We need every family to find the volunteer role that best suits them There is a job for you…..

  18. Concessions • $15 donation per family for concession stand (to raise money for team) • Concession proceeds go towards: • Team specific equipment (kick boards, shed) • Pep rallies • 4th of July Parade • Friday treats • Awards banquet All the extra touches that make the Piranhas great!

Communications • Provide email address – Team email popiranhas@yahoogroups.com This e-mail goes to all 3 of us • we try to have only one of us respond based on the question you are asking • Website – www.eteamz.active.com/pointersrunpiranhas. Will be updated at least 2 x per week. Nina Burns manages the site • White board will be posted at some practices • Mail folders alpha by family last name in team boxes • Yahoo List Serve • Some team information can also be found on the window next to the concession stand

  20. Swim Suits • 1st year of a 2-year suit • Try-on dates: • June 12th @ RH Meeting Room 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. • June 13th during Time Trials (by the baby pool) • Swimsuits can be purchased at Cy’s in Catonsville on Fredrick Road

  22. Pep Rallies • Held the evening before a home meet • 2 primary pep rallies this season (Friday June 19th, Friday July 10th) • Other smaller team spirit activities (Friday June 12th)

  23. Coaches • Coach swim history and CA background • Goals for swimmers and team • Coaching philosophy

  24. How can you help the coaches… • Give your children space at practice and let the coaches do their job… • Only approach the coaches before a practice begins or after the practices are finished. Leave them a note or speak with a manager • All requests to coaches by Tuesday at 10 a.m. after that time requests are considered for the next week

  25. How you can help the coaches… • Swim all events at Time Trials to qualify for all city • Return meet absence forms by Wednesday morning (coaches need this to complete the line-up) • Be a good sport and teach your children the to be the same… • Please remember this is not a Winter Swim team

Practice Schedule & Swim Groups • Refer to calendar for schedule; Alternate days EXCEPT: • Wednesday, June 17th HG • Thursday, June 18th HG • Friday, June 19th RH due to first Pep Rally • Communication of practice cancellations • If rain we will practice • E-mail through yahoo groups • If pool is closed no practice • THUNDER – no practice

USA Swimming and CNSL Rule Change • Starts in shallow end no longer allowed • This will impact ALL 100 yard relays • No change for 200 yard relays • 2nd and 4th swimmers will start in water and hold wall until 1st or 3rd swimmer reaches the wall • Coaches will practice this with the kids • This will also impact the Masters Relay • Change made with safety of all swimmers in mind
