  2. Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will evaluate to what extent the government promoted WWI by explaining how business and government cooperated during the war. Announcement: Chapter 11 Test Tuesday Review/Getting back into the game: Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper to be submitted. 1. Identify the 2 European alliances and the nations in each. 2. Identify and explain 2 reasons cited by the President that helped convince Congress to enter WWI.

  3. The War at Home Ch. 11 Sec. 3 pgs. 409-412 Congress Gives Power to Wilson Attacks against immigrants African-Americans moved for jobs Women worked in the factories Mobilize entire economy-shift from producing consumer goods to war supplies War Industries Board Main regulatory body Encouraged companies to use mass-production techniques Utilized psychological testing to place people in jobs

  4. Industrial production in U.S. increased by 20% WIB utilized price controls at the wholesale level Women’s clothing changed 1. corsets/steel ribs-battleships 2. Tall leather shoes-soldiers’ boots 3. Hemlines rose-military uniforms Railroad Administration Fuel Administration-introduced daylight savings

War Economy Wages increased for metal trades, shipbuilding, and meatpacking Wages decreased for clerks, managers, and lawyers Union membership rose and strikes were common National War Labor Board to settle disputes between management and labor workers were exempt from war and employers threatened to remove workers NWLB-8 hour day, safety inspection, enforce federal ban on child labor

Food Administration Herbert Hoover utilized a publicity campaign One day a week, meatless and sweetless Corn was pushed over wheat Victory gardens by homeowners Farmers’ income grew by 30% with high government prices on wheat Women 1 million entered workforce Most not paid the same as men Most lost jobs when the men returned

Selling the war The U.S. government utilized a media campaign to drum up support for the war War Financing U.S. spent 33 billion on war effort 1/3 from higher taxes War profits tax higher excise taxes on tobacco, liquor and luxury goods Public borrowing Committee on Public Information George Creel mobilized artists and advertising people to promote the war 4 Minute Men-spoke about everything related to the war

  8. Independent Work Answer the following questions and submit for a class-work grade. 1. What effects did the War Industries Board have on the economy? 2. What methods did the Committee on Public Information use to popularize the war? 3. Identify 3 social and 3 economic examples of the ways U.S. civilians supported the war effort.

  9. Exit Ticket/Homework 1. WWI War Chart-continue filling in the chart 2. Complete the Chapter 11 Section 3 Guided Reading for Friday. No late assignments except for snow or absence 3. Read the remaining pages in Section 3 and prepare for a 5 question quiz on Friday.
