Background on Core 40 Review • Created by HEA 1213 (now Public Law 49-2014) • By October 1, 2015: • Examine the current Core 40 offerings, including types of courses and diplomas offered • Make recommendations to the State Board of Education: • Changing course requirements for Core 40 (including credits) • Changing types of diplomas offered • Need for a career and technical education diploma • Examine and make recommendations concerning career and technical education offerings

  4. Current Types of Diploma • There are currently four types of high school diplomas: • General Diploma • Core 40 Diploma • Core 40 with Academic Honors • Core 40 with Technical Honors

Role of the Core 40:Graduation Requirement • Completion of the Core 40 is an Indiana graduation requirement unless a student and their parent formally opt out. • The opt out process is as follows: • The student, parent, and school counselor must meet to discuss the student’s progress. • The students career plan must be reviewed. • The student’s parent must determine whether the student will achieve greater educational benefit by completing the general curriculum over the Core 40 curriculum.

  6. Role of the Core 40:College Admissions Standard • An Indiana student is required to complete the Core 40 to be admitted as a freshman at an Indiana public university (not including Vincennes or Ivy Tech). • Exceptions to this requirement include: • Students who are transferring into an Indiana college and who have a C average with at least 12 credit hours. • Students who are over 21 years of age.

  7. Duties of Taskforce • Examine in-depth each of the diploma structures (General, Core 40, Academic Honors, and Technical Honors) to understand what value each of them hold with employers and postsecondary providers. • Consider best practices for showing the competencies that students have earned while in high school, regardless of which diploma they have achieved • Determine recommendations for changes to diploma structure, including whether or not there is a need for a career and technical education diploma

  8. Next steps Review of what some states are doing around diploma structure and requirements Next meeting is October 28th at 12pm with the full subcommittee to follow at 1:30pm.
